Stephen A. Smith calls Ben Simmons a quitter (LSU related)

Warning: Combo LSU/SAS hot take

Ben Simmons called out for quitting on every college/pro team he's played for (starts at 1:20 if you want to skip the crap). Glad it's finally getting some recognition

You know who isn't stupid? Stephen A Smith. He absolutely correct. Ben Simmons is a quitter, a giant pussy and a head case.

Yep. Some on here actually think Ben Simmons is one of the all-time LSU great players. Simmons is a joke and always has been.

It took 3 months of playing bball at LSU to realize Simmons was a quitter and he hasn't stopped proving people wrong since.

I dont get the "he quit on LSU" narrative - he played in every single game here and averaged like 35 min a game.

But his NBA career is certainly just 1 disappointment after the next recently. The fact he's refused to play this season despite being good to go for 2 teams and still hasn't developed any kind of shot after being in the NBA 6 years is just pure laziness.

Really? Before selection Sunday had started, he had already announced he wasn't going to play in the postseason. LSU had a chance at making the tournament, but without their star player, the committee dropped LSU from consideration. Then we were stuck in the NIT, but LSU withdrew itself from NIT consideration without their star player. His quitting made the whole team quit. A&M exposed Simmons lack of shooting with a good Zone defense. This continued in the NBA.

Steven A is a loudmouth douche, but he's right about this.

but he was a prima donna...he would dominate teams in the low block but wanted to play PG...not much of a team player

We were nowhere close to being a tournament team so this is entirely made up. We lost 14 games, got our arse kicked in our last game in SECT, our kenpom rating was in the 80s and RPI in the 90s. That's literally nowhere in the neighborhood of being potentially selected for a at-large berth.

We could have gone to the NIT, yes, but with his decision yes we skipped out on the THAT postseason. Which nobody really gave a crap about at the time honestly, the whole season was a huge disappointment.

Correct, with one of the most highly recruited players ever to come here.

He's a good athlete but a head case. He gave the effort he wanted to give.

Except for when he quit at the end of the season and we didn’t go to the NIT because of it. He straight up quit, no getting around it.

And based off of his limited pro career. He should have been playing PG. He could get to the rim at will from anywhere. His issue is his complete lack of shooting ability and the "at will" part.

His last game he led the team in points and rebounds and was 2nd minutes. He didn’t “straight up quit”. He was always a one and done player.

He played 87% of the total minutes that season and averaged 19 pts and 12 rebounds.

As long as we're consistent with calling every "opt-out" of bowl season we have also quitting in football I think the language is appropriate. If not, then he simply "opted out" much like a ton of our football players do when we dont make the playoffs.

I find the "he quit" thing a little extreme when he was by far our best player that season and played in every game the team had. Yeah he announced he was done and going pro after the season was over, but we had zero shot of making the NCAAT at that point and were only an NIT team which is zero benefit to him if he's going NBA and knew he was the top pick. I'm fine calling it "opting out" since that's basically what it's called in football...but again, if we're calling that quitting (not playing in the NIT). Then call every LSU football player who ever opted out a bowl game, or even regular season games for the matter a quitter as well. I mean people cant possibly be actually upset he didnt want to play in the NIT as the #1 overall pick. The entire fanbase wanted that season over with anyways. There's certainly times you want to play in the NIT and develop guys, like in wade's first season here people were excited to make the NIT after being the league's worst team the year before. I think this upcoming season people would be happy with an NIT berth if McMahon could pull that off year 1 with the turnover we've had. A little bit different Simmons' year here though when everyone not only expected an NCAAT team but one who might even be able to go deep.

If Simmons quit for not wanting to play in the NIT then Fournette quit for not playing in the bowl game. It’s dumb to suggest either quit on LSU.

I’m not sure why people are upset about Simmons. The only reason he came here was because of his godfather, he had no other connection to the school. Why do people think he would have the same passion about the university as a die hard fan? He looked at LSU as a one year stop gap until the NBA, which is exactly what a one and done prospect does.

That team had a lot more issues than just Simmons (Quarterman, Hornsby injury).

His shooting issues, which I believe to be 100% mental with him, were exposed long before the A&M game.

For my part, something never sat well with me. I mean, he filled the stat sheet up, his talent was unmistakable - guy his size who could handle like that.....but he always seemed to leave me wanting for more and expecting more.

I was told by a couple of folks who watched the documentary they did when he was here not to watch it - they knew what a big LSU hoops guy I am and they said it would piss me off. So I never did watch it.
