Why are you worried about his defense he was coming back from a knee injury and could not stay down on the ball. He was fine the last 3rd of the year. If he hits he is a major league player. Honestly I am more worried about his hitting.

What in the world ever suggested to you that his hitting is a concern? He has hit since he got here. His defense was clearly the issue last year.

I am talking about as a pro. I am not worried at LSU. He has always hit in clutch situations. I was just making a point that everyone was ragging on him last year about his defense. He was good the last part of the season and his bad play was most likely due to his injury.

If Morgan wasn't his first basemen would have had atleast 7 or 8 more Errors.

Well being that 99% of the posters here are worried about LSU, and there is the detail that Thompson currently plays for LSU, I think that is our main focus. I doubt anybody cares about where he projects as a pro right now.

Was a statement made in regards to how much he really struggled defensively and in particular throwing to first not just fielding the ball. And yes, we hope we have Morgan all year at first but you hope your ss improves dramatically from the year prior.

He's our SS. And we still don't have another good option. Guidry kicked it around in the fall. Nippolt and Merrifield aren't SSs. Let's just hope Thompson has a good year. Jay intended to put his feet to the fire with Pineda and Young, but it didn't work out. We have infield help already on the way for next year, and wouldn't put it past Jay to go in the portal again there.

Neal and hurd are going to be legit.

During his preseason presser Coach Johnson put Thompson in the same catagory as Crews as far as value to the team. He is definently our SS.

Thompson has zero competition at SS

Because he’s that far ahead of the next guy. Three year SEC starter who was the 53rd ranked player in the class of 2020. I was all for Jay working the portal to find the best players he could to compete at short but Thompson is the guy and he’s going to get an incredibly long leash

Jay has always spoken highly of Thompson, but he did go out and get 2 guys with plenty of experience at SS, and Thompson started the summer playing other positions. Pineda and Young just didn't make it to campus. The projection on Thompson has always been there, so I don't doubt Jay sees something in him. But, I'm sure he wants to give him some confidence, too - nothing worse than a SS that gets in his own head. Jay isn't going to let him sit out there and hurt the defense/pitchers unless he's absolutely crushing the ball - he's really just an average hitter, with flashes above average. Guidry will catch up enough if Thompson isn't progressing.

I mean Johnson did everything he could to add a SS this offseason. I don’t mind Thompson but he is basically the SS by default. He’s that far ahead because there really isn’t another SS on the roster

Alot of walks today. Hopefully that's just the pitchers trying to work on painting the corners.

Really excited about these two.

Yep, he legit tried to have competition there, so thompson is the guy by default. Hopefully he plays better defense this year so it isnt our undoing
