There doesn't seem to be a bottom to the guys that we can roll out at DH. Beck, who homered last weekend, rewrote the record books offensively at Carnate Word.
As a coach, I imagine you are looking at multiple things. You want to win the game foremost. You want to give second tier guys opportunities. You also want to give freshmen some development. Jay mentioned Ryan in an interview I listened to this morning. Jay likes him defensively and said he has good speed. Jay then mentioned they have something they are working on with his hitting and that he has good bat speed and potential. Jay wants to get him some at bats during games.
Jay said expect a lot of guys to play on a weekend. OF and DH will rotate a lot. Catcher could depend on who matches up with what pitcher. If they are not catching, all three are worthy of DH. That's not even mentioning Yamin who could develop. Arrambide is just a freshman but man the bat has been impressive.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to spend as much time keeping up with the offseason as I’d like- what’s the deal with Frey? I was really hoping he’d fully develop and we’d have another big power bat in the lineup but it doesn’t seem like he’s being mentioned much at any position. Is it just not clicking for him?

A thought I had this morning is we might have missed a little in the portal on the power side but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Trevor Schmidt, no longer on the team. Yamin, might not get enough bats and hasn't taken off yet. Hernandez, 23 HR's last year but so far, I don't see a ton of power. I could say the same about Dickinson and his 18 HR's last year. Beck will have a hard time getting at bats. It just seems like we signed more power on paper than what has actually produced on the field.
I'm not worried about it. We have enough power to be very productive on some of these smaller fields and enough good hitters to be productive in bigger parks. Jay did mention, that he feels the offense will be good this year.

The jury is still out on Frey. The potential is still there. We can't really go by last year because he had that shoulder injury. He looks fully healed but he has settled in the OF that is crowded. There are 8 guys in the OF that you wouldn't be upset about starting. He has more power than most of the bats on the team and it is showing again in practice and scrimmages. He is also capable of hitting for a high average. He doesn't strike out as much as Priester or Jones.
His biggest problem is that he isn't a defensive wizard. He can't hit just okay and expect to play. He will have to hit at a level that you can't do without him on offense. He has that potential but potential means you haven't done it yet.

I think you are a little low on Curiel's hitting grade.
Yes, for sure.
15:10 BB;K this offseason vs the staff LSU has is impressive and a sign of a guy that is going to be an excellent hitter.

I think you either provide positional value somewhere, or mash the ball enough to where you have to be inserted somewhere. And Frey has not been able to check either box thus far.
Or even pull a little bit from both sides of that equation.

I still think he has high potential to reach. He has been put in a tough spot with coming out of a low level HS in Louisiana and not doing a ton of showcase type stuff because he was also a really good QB. That in itself puts you behind some of the other guys as far as competition faced. Factor that in with his heath issues over the last 2 years and you can see how he still could have plenty growth. Problem is that it is hard to reach that potential without getting the reps and if he can't make it work to get into the lineup then the reps aren't there.

Milam is going to be worn out if they move him around in season as much as preseason. It’s a lot.
You think a college athlete will be worn out by shifting from one side of the 2nd base bag to the other in between at bats? I think he will be fine.
I like the idea of Jay doing that if he truly thinks Milam is the best defender in the IF. I like how he compares it to football with putting your best CB on their best WR or in basketball putting your best defender on their best scorer. I think a lot of people are nervous or don't like it because it isn't typical. Same with people hating defensive shifts.

Yea I don’t understand why it would taxing, it’s no different than shifting for certain hitters.
I think it talks more to striking out at the SS position since Jordan Thompson left. A school like lsu shouldn’t have to do gimmicky stuff.

It's only "gimmicky" because it isn't traditional baseball in playing your position. It's thinking out the box a little. The plus to doing it this year is you have infielders capable of playing all positions so you don't really lose anything by moving them around as far as range/turning double plays. If you have a LH batter up that typically hits the ball to 2nd base why wouldn't you put your best defender in a spot to make the play. No knock on the 2B, but if it is that obvious that Milam is a better defender than the other 2 then I like it.

No, it’s definitely gimmicky. Doesn’t help that Milan was hurt & Dickinson wasn’t able to play SS

What is this, 10 year old travel ball?
Save me the "what about Jordan Thompson in 2023?" That happened because we had no one to play 2B.
The phrase we are looking for here is.... "over thinking it"

Just wanted to pop in to say how awesome this thread has been. Feels like a one-stop shop to get a feel for the team and get hyped for the season. Appreciate the work you put into this every year, Adam.

If you were out there seeing it, you would probably agree it is a bit much. He would go from deep short to basically short right field (about 20 feet past the dirt) in between batters.
I may count how many times he shifts this weekend.

I don't think it's the same thing at all. In those two sports you're anticipating/reacting to another players movements. In baseball there's a lot of routine muscle memory and I would think switching positions mid-inning can make for some potential mental-lapses and errors on routine plays. It also kinda disrupts the flow and timing of the IF when turning DPs. I understand it when your 2B has a shoulder injury like Dugas, but if all your IFs are average to above at playing all 3 positions then i dont get it. Seems like youre doing more harm than good. Idk I remain skeptical on this for now.
Regarding Larson, I'm really excited about watching him play this year. He apparently put up excellent numbers at the Cape and I think if our new S&C program can put a little power in him he could become the heir to Jones at 1B next year

Why would a guy (Larson) with 40 starts batting close to .300 his freshman year (first year of SEC comp) get booted from a spot in the outfield for a transfer (Stanfield) who batted .278 in his sophomore year (second year of SEC Comp)?
Seems like they have just about equal floors with one having a much higher ceiling going into his second year.
I understand the hype around the freshman (Curiel) batting over .450 against this machine of pitching staff all spring, and I absolutely want to see Jake Brown on the field every night. But the third spot in the OF should be Larson's spot to lose to start the season. Stanfield is 100% a ball player but to pencil him in as starting CF is BOLD.

It’s not bold at all. Stanfield is gonna start in CF.
