I'd be shocked if Fontenot doesn't start on 2/18. In no way do I think he's proven to be the Friday night guy, but I do think he deserves the first crack at it. Now, on the other hand, Jay might not feel like he owes anybody anything.

Lansville has probably been the most consistent in the fall and spring. If Jay goes strictly by merit, barring a bad outing this weekend, Lansville gets the ball on 2/18.

With regards to the lineup, I think it's down to Gio, Jobert, Beloso, McManus, Milazzo, and Bianco for the starts on opening day. If McManus catches, you have an OF and the DH spot up for grabs. If Milazzo catches, you probably just have the OF spot available.

With that said, I think we see alot of guys, alot of combinations, etc throughout the weekend.

Have to believe that means McManus as the starting DH?

With all the talk about tandem starters, openers, using a ton of pitchers, and the general trends of pitching across baseball, I've noticed that the California JUCOs don't give a shite about any of that. I've been looking at box scores the last couple of weeks. They routinely have guys going 6+ innings, 25-30 batters faced. It's kind of a throwback. I'm interested to see some of these guys progress in their careers and I wonder if having the ability to work deep into games will serve them well going forward even if they aren't considered to have the best "stuff".

I'd think so. I could also see him going another route, planning for McManus to play (even if not catch both) the next 2 games then weekday. Either way, I think we'll get a good look at both early and some other DHs, too.

Jay said this morning that they have guys ready to go 5-6 innings. Not backtracking on what he has been saying, but he did lean more to having starters go a little deeper then onto a bridge and onto a "closer". That was the recipe for most of the CWS teams.

Yeah, it was more of comment on how they're kind of bucking the general trend than anything specific to what LSU is doing.

I will say this about LSU and what Johnson and Kelly have been saying. They've talked about using more pitchers and potentially not having a set rotation. Non-traditional roles, etc.

But they also talked about how guys have added pitches, become accustomed to using 3 or 4 pitches comfortably. To me, that means they want to get to traditional starters at some point in the season. Every additional pitch you use more than 10% of the time in a game reduces the third-time-through-the-order-penalty. They aren't looking to just have a bunch of two-pitch guys that can only go 1 inning at a time. They're trying to set up a bunch of guys for multiple inning appearances. And they're hoping for 3-4 guys emerge as innings eaters.

Lansville looks like 1. Hilliard has proven in the past he's 1. Money and Hellmers are early contenders apparently. But performances will ebb and flow. I have high hoped for Ty Floyd.

I like Floyd in the middle innings, following a softer throwing control guy. Bring a lefty in for a situation then close it out with Reyz or Gervase or Fontenot.

Also, one guy that has gotten hardly any pub is Merrifield. It's been quiet on him. I think he finds his way into the lineup alot - he's too pure on offense and defense not to.

Is Floyd a draft eligible soph?
I think Merrifield is a luxury in that you don't have to rush him, it sets up for him to get a lot more playing time in 23 similar to some other guys like Leto and Pearson

No matter how good you are the SEC is an adjustment, even a player like Crews got off to a very slow start against sec pitching.

Probably.

It depends on when the draft is held. He's pretty much within the 45 days if they hold it at a similar time this year as they did last year (depends on the specific day, he's that close to the cut line). If they move it back up to the earlier time, he would not be draft eligible.

What’s your reasoning to think Fontenot “deserves” to start Friday night?

Like Dugas deserved #8 for staying, being a leader, high character guy, I believe Devin has also put in the time and effort to throw the first pitch of the 2022 season.

I guess we'll find out if Jay is into symbolic gestures a week from today.

ETA: I know this won't appeal to everyone, but if anyone is looking for general college baseball content the ABCA Season Preview podcast is up now for every level below D1. 2.5 hours of NAIA, JUCO, D3, and D2 content. I have headphones in for 85% of my work day so I'm always hunting for content, but I understand this seems a little extreme.

That's all I was insinuating. Give him first crack then let the chips fall where they may. We should drum Maine 3 times regardless.

Nap has been cranky all off season.

Crankier than me even. Admittedly, that's tough to do.

If asking questions is cranky then I guess I’m a cranky sob. I will just remain silent on your reasoning
