Austin Hotel Price Gouging

How dare they! It's not just Austin, tard.
I'm going to a Microsoft Applications Summit next week in downtown Atlanta. Last week the only rooms available close to the conference were pushing $700-900.
My coworker was late to the party and has to cab it from 15 miles away each day now.
Boooo Capitalism.

beware that all downtown - university hotels are pretty much sold out, and prices are jacked big time for 9-7 all over the city.
This is the perfect situation in a capitalistic economy

Demand - high
Supply - low

Prices Increase

I made my reservations on October 15, 2018

Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol

Check In 06-SEP-2019 - 3:00 PM *
Check Out 08-SEP-2019 - 12:00 PM *
Number of Rooms 1

Room Rate $217.55/night

After taxes it's $500.37 for the weekend for a room with 2 queen beds. Breaks down to $125/person

You've got to be prepared if you want to travel to big games

Gouging implies they're taking advantage of a situation like a hurricane evacuation. Raising rates for a football game or music festival is totally different than taking advantage of people fleeing a hurricane or floods or other natural disaster.

Your best bet would be to do an Airbnb and rent from some hippie that doesn’t even realize there’s a big football game next year

Thats what we did. But we booked back in November. All those places have been taken and remaining airbnb places have prices that are high as frick

ALWAYS make the reservations to an away game 50 weeks in advance (most hotels allow you to do this) and you can cancel later

This is sound advice, and i’m amazed that most people dont do this.. I live out of state and we go to most LSU home games, so i always make reservations for hotels in Baton Rouge a year in advance.. Also i’ll usually book a year ahead for wherever the Nat’l Title game will be, in case LSU makes it.. as well as neutral site games..It also helps if you try to be ‘loyal’ to one hotel chain/group; if you book on their websites and are a ‘member’, you’ll usually have until a day or two before the game to cancel if you can’t make it.

I booked 4 rooms at the Hilton downtown back in September for $300/night each - checking in Friday and checking out Sunday.

I'm not sure if our group will be going so I may be releasing them sometime during the Summer. I'm guessing there are many other people who are in the same boat.

So, just be on the look-out as the Summer starts coming to an end to see if you can pick up rooms from people who can't make it.

Dear LSU Football Season Ticket Holder,

We want to make sure the purple and gold are heard and seen at the highly-anticipated Texas-LSU matchup on September 7. And, we know many of you are planning to try and make the short trip west to do exactly that. Demand for this game will be high and we will have extremely limited availability of tickets, so we are alerting our ticketholders today to plan to purchase tickets via StubHub no matter where you are on the point system

Related: Stopped at a crappy hotel in Bristol TN once. Room was about $45. I asked how much for a race weekend.(This was back when they sold out the race for years.) It was like $275, with a 3-night minimum.

My dad and I went to Cooperstown several years back. Paid no attention and ended up there induction weekend. $250 cash for a motel room that hadn’t been updated since the 70s.

I made my reservations in January. Have a room at the Hilton Garden Inn, in downtown. Friday to Sunday for $476 (total). Two weeks later, went to book another room for my parents and rooms went up to $450/night.
