I think Jay didn't have the usual time to evaluate picks since he was so laser focused last year. By the time LSU went in, some guys were already gone and the portal wasn't as deep. I think he relied a bit on help here because a similar thing happened his first championship. The next season was an off year. Whatever is going on here needs to be fixed and I'm sure he knows it for sure now. They'll be back next year no doubt.
Easier for some teams to make moves in portal when you have all the time in the world to do it while sitting at home watching regionals/CWS. It's Jay's fault. That simple. He knows it, we know it.

Single game results can often lie with an individual. Overall season results can’t be placed on anyone other than the head coach. Especially seasons like this. Jays great, doesn’t mean he did great this year. It’s pretty clear Jay has been frustrated with results this year. I’m 100 percent certain he is taking what he perceived his mistakes to be on board for building next season.

Player’s performance. I plaid D1, coached D1 and baseball fans have no idea that coaching plays such a small role in baseball compared to other sports. Baseball is the most self-centered team sport. No plays to call, no one to block for you. It’s all on a player on the mound, in the box, fielding a ground ball, etc.
And when it comes to development, fans are delusional on how that actually works. If you’re thinking that coaches are working on basic fundamentals each and every day, you’d be way off. Baseball is about individual work and reps and the approach by coaches regardless of the level is that they think the more you play, the better you get.

Didn't hit on transfers...i'm finding the transfer game in baseball can be a crap shoot unless your signing from within the SEC. Even Carroway didn't pan out coming from the PAC. We had a diamond with Tommy White but who else really has panned out. Stanfield came from within conference and has been good...thats my example of intra conference transfer. I think SEC is too dominant and is hard to compare to other conferences.

The play of the team is a reflection of the head coach. Period. End of story.
Ill give jay this. He is playing freshman and sticking with them. Hope he doesnt change this.

I don't agree with the premise that there's "1 thing that's the issue." Ultimately, all the credit and blame go to Jay. But that makes for a very short and shallow discussion. I think there are several factors (no particular order):
- Stoopid plays. Just untimely stoopid plays. Examples: Arrambide getting picked-off 3B vs OM in G1 when we had Elliot on the ropes. Later, same game tied 3-3, Braun gets picked-off 1B. No excuses for either of those. Standfield's poor throw home vs OM when Furniss scored. Ruckert vs OU in G3 makes a two-run error on a common play (we lost 4-3). Yesterday, Carraway's throw that pulled Ruckert off 2B. Milam not keeping his foot on 2B. There's a season long litany of this type stuff.
- Jay doesn't know his pitching staff so he (IMO) mismanages the staff. FTR, he pulled Anthony too early in Austin last year as well.
. The obvious - portal misses. Moore was a success. Most of the others (Yorke, Simpson, Carraway, and (to a lesser extent) Dardar) have been whiffs. IMO, this has been a double-edge sword. Not only have they not produced, they've preempted PT from younger players (Braun, Ruckert) who could've had a greater RoI.
Finally, Jay has shown he can win it all given great players. Not familiar with his body of work pre-LSU, but he needs to show he can get us to Omaha with less than great players. He's a great coach. I don't think he misses too much. He'll learn.
As for this season. It's gonna take a 'miracle' run down the stretch to even make the post-season. Can happen. AlwysATgr will be there to the end.

I say the 'staff ' has grossly let JJ down in just about every area of coaching baseball and running a program.
I think JJ is as good as there is, but his staff simply has to be replaced as they have demonstrated over and over a total lack of teaching, instructing, motivating and of the disciplines necessary in winning baseball.
It can be fielding, throwing, catching, plate discipline, overall hitting, bunting, base running, pitching and any and all other areas of baseball.
I can't identify one new player that has gotten better as the season progressed.
I personally hope JJ removes the entire coaching staff. LSU needs new blood, new techniques in all areas of the game. Just one opinion.

Several factors.
NCAA went from 11.7 scholarships to 25 in baseball so other schools offered portal guys full rides they weren’t offered before.
LSU lost the advantage with adding TOPS to the 11.7 so the playing field was leveled.
We lost some of our freshman class to offers by other teams.
LSU still in omaha when the portal opened and many top guys made decisions before we even knew who was coning back.
Scott woodward cut baseball’s rev sharing portion of the 20.5 million alotment we were at the lower end of the SEC
Rumor has it Woodward didn’t fund the full 25 scholarships because of TOPS. Someone else will have to confirm.
We are just initiating a new NIL collective for baseball similar to football was not in place last year.
Throw all that together and it made a difference.

quote:you can see alot of this reflecting in gameplay. The plate approach is wildly all over the place. Too many pitch counts show the same patterns of failure that just leave you with a wtf moment. Its late in the season and basic fundamentals of the game are failing all over the place. Baserunning decisions especially at 3rd have been a gut punch at times going back to 2024. Last night I even saw Jay having to "correct" and shut a kid down while he is trying to coach the game inside the dugout. The look on his face wasnt good. Personally, whomever it was , he should have ran his arse out of the dugout on the spot.

The offense with all of their warts is still good enough to be an above. 500 sec team and compete for regional host. The glaring problem is starting pitching. Last year we had rhe same issues with lack of depth but overcame it with 2 bell cow starters and two all sec relievers. We lack front line starting pitching.

Of course its evaluation, which is ultimately jay’s responsibility. Im confident he’ll get it fixed for the next few years
It’s not just evaluation. Injuries have been a major issue since the start of the season. We’ve lost two key vets for the season and Stanny has never been at full speed this season. On a team replacing as much as this one, that can’t be discounted.
Also, many of our returning vets have played well below their level this year. Milam is hitting better now, but struggled for weeks. Jake struggled vs SEC competition. Evans hasn’t translated to being a good starter. Williams didn’t take the next step after a promising end of the season last year. Guidry and Cowan haven’t been completely reliable. Noot has disappeared.
The evaluations of portal players was poor, but these other issues have played a major role in our struggles, as well.
The recruiting evaluations look much better than the portal. Braun and Serna are already regular contributors. Patrick is showing some potential after being thrown into the lineup. Paz could be an elite pitcher. So it’s not like player evals are bad across the board.

I'm glad you brought up the exaggerated framing by the catchers. Being a former catcher, it caught my eye early in the season. When pitches are close to the corners, whoever the catcher is, doesn't matter, they jerk the mit to the middle of the plate. The umpire realizing the jerk, more often than not seems to call a ball, when just holding the pitch on the edge of the plate may have given the pitcher many more strikes this season, and some in critical situations. From my viewpoint, this is just lazy non coaching by whoever is handling the catchers. It is like they don't even realize what is going on, or maybe they even taught our catchers to jerk the mitt. Hard to comprehend that it is still happening this late in the season on a top program.

Team chemistry sucks plus some of the portal guys couldn’t hang in the SEC

Jay and his staff came up short in the portal. Without revenue sharing, they ended up settling for talent that isn’t where it needs to be. This season should be treated as a FIDO (Forget It, Drive On) year—focus on the freshmen and prioritize their development.
