To provide further context:

2024 (SEC games) opening drives:

South Carolina: 3 plays, 6 yards, punt
Ole Miss: 3 plays, 7 yards, punt
Arkansas: 8 plays, 75 yards, TD
A&M: 3 plays, -1 yard, punt
Alabama: 6 plays, 44 yards, FG
Florida: 5 plays, 21 yards, turnover on downs after failing to pick up 2 yards on two plays
Vandy: 3 plays, 3 yards, punt
OU: 6 plays, 17 yards, punt

2025

Florida: 3 plays, 6 yards, punt.

This isn't a baseless opinion. The data shows that in SEC play Sloan has been terrible to start games. Mostly because it is a very predictable and ultra-conservative approach.

Compare that to 2019 where LSU scored on their opening drive in 7 of 9 SEC games (including the SECCG). Yes, that 2019 offense was great with (eventual) All Pro players. No, I'm not saying this year's and last year's talent level was up to that point. But the level in talent between that 2019 team and Sloan's two teams wasn't SO vast to alone explain the extreme differences in production. It's a mindset for the OC. From the opening snap Brady was in attack mode. Sloan spends most of every 1st quarter running predictable, ultra-conservative, and largely ineffective plays, before, at some point, remembering the strengths of his players.

We need to stop wasting our first three drives with garbage scripted plays.

I guarantee that if you got a private audience with Sloan, and he explained what they were doing with those scripted plays, your reaction would be, “Wow, I had no idea.”

The play calling played a role as well. Its been pretty bad this year. SELU, pass 4 yards behind the LOS, nuss throws it behind him for a loss of 4. 2nd and 14 and we run up the middle and get stuffed. 3 n long and we pass it 6 yards behind the 1st diwn marker.

We also didnt get a first down until the 4th damn drive vs florida.

3 and out is a staple of the Kelly offense

Is it only Kelly's offense when things are bad or was he not the coach when we had the #1 offense in the country.

If the RB keeps running into the center’s rear end it will continue to be three and out. Sloan’s play calling is too predictable. I hope he changes up for this game.

Enlighten me then. I can understand easing our way into a game, but we waste the entire first quarter with scripted plays that are so predictable that the fans in the stands know what's coming. Sooner or later, it is going to catch up with us. We will find ourselves down by 10-14 points before we try to open up the offense.

Part of the reason coaches script plays is they want to see how defenses will react/play to certain formations and plays. That said, you still want to call plays that will have success. Regardless of his reasons for scripting the plays, the data shows LSU rarely has offensive success early in games.

In 12 games vs. FBS opponents to date, LSU has scored more than 3 points in the first quarter 5x. Six times they have been shut out completely in the 1Q. This year, against FBS opponents, LSU hasn't scored a single 1Q point.

Now, to Sloan's credit, the offense generally starts to pick up in the 2Q, but not drastically when you consider LSU hasn't been a high scoring team under Sloan (47th in ppg last year; 89th this year...which includes the 56 points vs SLU and 6 on Spear's pick 6)

There can be a balance of scripting plays to get a read on the defense, but also trying to have success early. More often than not, the 1Q is a waste for LSU in terms of scoring.

Yeah, “Wow, had no idea you were so inept.”

Once again, if you think that Sloan is the problem here, you are more than likely an idiot.

Players are wide open on these throws, and Nuss isnt making the reads and instead throws to check downs.

Most drives in general are three & out

No, according to the interwebs, 34.5% of drives are 3 and out. So barely more than a third of them.
