As an LSU fan, who do you despise more: Alabama or Auburn?

Up until the time that Saban was hired, I loathed Auburn far more than Alabama. The Tide has essentially been irrelevant this decade and, as a result, their fans have been tolerable.

Now I abhor Alabama, and not merely because Saban is their coach. Saban's arrival in Tuscaloosa, while despicable and unnatural in and of itself, also activated some atavistic, dormant genome in certain Tide fans. Now they give sweaty faced, trembling, febrile testimonials in foreign tongues about the manifest destiny of the Tide. They perspire long-repressed arrogance. They writhe on the floor and contort their spines. A small but vocal sect vehemently believes that Julio Jones has healng powers. They've adopted obscure Calvinist theologies, comfortable that they are the elect and everyone else is the preterite.

It bothers me.

They act as if it is a foregone conclusion that the Tide will return to its rightful place atop the AP poll, despite the profound changes that have swept across the college football landscape over the last twenty years. LSU's sleeping giant has awakened. Auburn is a far better, more consistent program than it has been in quite a while. The last time Alabama won a championsip, Florida was just a young whelp under the tutelage of a madman named Spurrier. Now it's grown into a perennial juggernaut. UGA recruits in the top five every year. SC has blossomed into respectability. Hell, even Tennessee won a national crown. Everyone has great facilities now. And wealthy boosters. And fertile regional recruiting. And ample tradition. And there are scholarship limits which ensure parity. Things done changed.

Listen, the "A" in your logo doesn't stand for "Anachronism." And while general relativity holds that mass warps space and time, the cumulative weight of all your barbecue eaten' asses sitting in Bryant-Denny still isn't going to take you back to 1963.

All I'm saying is this:

Saban is a good coach. Alabama can be a good team. But please, Tide fans, stop preachin' about the return of the king, the rapture, the second reign. As Lawrence of Arabia once said: nothing is written.

Alabama. I was raised an Auburn fan, so my hatred for Alabama began at birth...

I've lived in Alabama for 25 years, and at first it wasn't too bad, LSU finally got their act together and it became fun to live here, going around with LSU logo on...but yes Bama fans have become so nausiating in their quest to be the ole bama, their rightful place in college football..yea right, those days are gone..get real. LSU IS HERE TO STAY ON TOP!..for a while anyway...

That was an impressive um....rant?

Whatever it was I like it. Lots of big pretty words and I got the impression you don't like Bama too much.

I don't recall an "A" being on their helmets, but regardless, why write this stupid diatribe? Sounds like you are jealous of their tradition and wins. You should learn to love the one you're with.

Good point on the helmets. Changed.

As for being jealous, that certainly isn't true. In fact, that sounds like something a Bama fan would say.

My point is that everyone has tradition. The SEC is tradition. Auburn has it. UGA has it. LSU has it. Tennessee has it. Florida has it.

It means nothing.

Tradition is dead letter, bodies in a ditch. They ain't gonna come back to life and win the war.

Florida is not for example. I think you also underestimate the value tradition has in recruiting.

First of all, those two statements seem a little contradictory. If Florida doesn't have tradition, it sure hasn't hurt their recruiting!

And I agree that tradition matters to the fans, but I think it has no bearing on the outcome of games.

As for recruiting, I think recent success has more impact than tradition lost in the sands of time. I doubt the 17 year old African American kid from Florida cares one wit about (or even knows about) the fate of some ancient team of redneck lore.

Loathing Alabama is a part of me. I've always loathed them and always will. A friend of mine who has the same feelings stated it best. "I hate Auburn for one week of the year, but I hate Alabama every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year that I live."

sorry to say it but it does seem a little like alabama is getting their act together whether its b/c of saban or not but regardless it's getting more exiting everytime we play them and i believe that's what college football is all about. who wants to play the same ole mediocre team of alabama we've been playin the last six years. i say bring that sh*t on!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bama has skins and a tradition of championships. Auburn has a tradition of being Auburn. Easy choice for me.
