Was it more you didn’t even know who he was so no big loss. We generally think this is a great pick up. Your O line is always good and he sounds like a guy that we need from his willingness to hold players accountable.

Thanks Tiger Fans

He never really popped up on my radar so I guess that's good. Oline wasn't great or shite

An o line coach who last called plays in high school? Not a great hire.

We hired a new oline coach within an hour, pretty sure we had an idea

You'll get mixed reactions on here. Some people didnt like our offensive line play under him, while others saw that he sent numerous OLinemen to the NFL.

Overall he doesn't have OC experience, so that should be of some concern for you. Having said that I hope he works out for you guys!

There have been years when we've been really fustrated with Grimes due to OL recruiting or poor performance and then there are years where he seems like a different coach entirely.

Take this year, we had ALOT of turnover at OL and while the youth that had to step in struggled out the gate he had them playing real well by the end of the season

Everyone thought he sucked, until this year he redeemed himself imo. I would say in general, the jury is still out. He may do well for you guys or be a total bust.

I was honestly shocked he got hired as an OC.

When we lost our OC last season, we promoted a different guy (TE Coach Ensminger) to be OC who hadn't called plays in like 15 years, so unless Grimes is some hidden gem I dont know how good a hire he is as a OC.

Everyone has an opinion. But I for one was glad to hear the news. We always say, take a friend with you when you leave. I have another coach in mind that coaches on offense. Please take him too.

I don't know what kind of OC he will make, but for all the grief he caught early on, he molded the O Line into an asset by the end of the season.

he was not a favorite coach and got blamed for the attrition the last year but he WAS the coach of the young me that remained and they developed into a very descent unit...he does hold his players accountable and he can recruit

As an Oline coach I thought he was meh. He did a really good job improving the line this year after a shaky start with multiple Fr being forced to play.

I think he has a couple of cons:
1) he likes raw athletic tackles but they never seem to pan out.
2) I think he has his OL think too much. he has them looking in the secondary to determine what the D is doing, which is great BUT it comes at the expense of physicality at the point of attack.

overall, I think he has a good football mind and is a pretty good recruiter, I think he struggled with player evaluations and overall player development.

Edit: above I mean, he can recruit and get good players but he doesnt always pick the best players to go after.

Who knows, maybe he will be a better OC than he was an OL coach.

He is a good recruiter and seems to be hit or miss as a teacher of technique on the o-line. Some guys seemed to get much better and some years the Oline seemed like it was the same from the first week to the last. His olines were generally pretty good though and definitely above average in the SEC.

No idea what kind of offense he will run, but I would bet it would be different from the typical QB centric BYU offense.

Did a wonderful job with our OL this year and he’s a decent recruiter and great guy. Players love him.

No clue how he’ll do as an OC.

Well, we also hired our DL coach as permanent head coach. So I wouldn’t put too much stock in the decision making within our football program.

As a caveat to this I've heard the opposite from other folks on players "loving" him. Not saying all hate him but the guy did have a metric butt ton of transfers under his watch the last 2 years.

Grimes may have been the most hot/cold position coach over the last few years. Most wanted him fired with Miles (and before) but no one really knew if it was more related to Miles (OL recruiting philosophy) or Grimes. Others thought he did a good job coaching what we had. Last year’s OL was bitched about here a ton, but actually graded out very high of PFF at the end of the year. This year’s OL was very young, with ZERO depth, and they showed great improvement throughout the season.

Grimes can be blamed and/or get credit for some or all of this. I think he lands somewhere in the middle. Overall, you guys could do worse. I have no idea about his play calling ability.
