I am not disagreeing and maybe it is called like that all the time. But what is the letter of the law? Laird was within the baseline when the defender missed the tag? He only stepped out afterwards.

Laird hit a triple that was called foul . But for that lsu wins without extra innings!!because a runner was thrown out at 2nd
Laird reached on a fielders choice! Had the triple counted we would have scored 4 runs that inning instead of three!

He went well out of the baseline.

the best part is that he also scored

Is what Laird did illegal?
i don't know how the ump interpreted the rule. the announcer quoted the rule book which HE SAID "the baserunner must stay within the runners box with both feet, after he passes the halfway point between home plate and first base."
I think 9 times out of 10 he would have been called out. But like a previous poster said, that was a makeup call for the blown double earlier in the game. it wasn't the game winning run anyway so it really doesn't matter.

Oh well, LSU got some bad calls too, so f¥^k it. That's sports. The better team won the series.

To the arky fans, in the alleged words of Brett Bonvillian-frick off!

LSU fans would be mad if it was an Arky runner and we just blew the lead. Might be considered pay back but those white lines are there for a purpose.

Point out to me the next time that's enforced when a batter gets a clean hit to the OF and rounds first base.

usually the in the baselines rules are only enforced when guys are trying to avoid a tag. If they aren't avoiding a tag, they don't even care.

Oh I understand that.
Just making the point that the "two feet inside the runner's box" rule is seldom enforced unless the batter/runner interferes w/ the throw to first. And that's usually a result of him running INSIDE the baseline.
FWIW, I thought Laird should've been called out. However, it didn't really matter in the outcome of the game. I'll take it.

i omitted the part and he did mention that "trying to avoid a tag" was part of the rule. was trying to go from memory of what the announcer said.

I know that. My question is not if he went out, but instead does it matter when he went out? Not according to you or Joe or how it has traditionally been called, but according to the rules.
I am not saying he was safe or out. I don't know the particulars of the rule. I am not a huge baseball fan.
Point is "if" the rule says you can't leave the base line to get out of a tag... well technically he avoided the tag without crossing out of the baseline.

He should have been called out. Bottom line.

Now this is the MLB rule, which is the same as the NCAA rule, but describes it better. This makes that play more interesting because i assumed he went too far to avoid the tag.

anyone have a picture or youtube link for the "foul" ball Laird hit early that was really fair? want to post it on facebook in response to a "friend" who is griping about Laird's call in the 10th. :)

A batter can make a wide turn at first after a hit but beyond that, he can not leave the white lines to avoid a tag, which Laird did specifically. A legit bitch but then their batters had one bunt single out of the last 19 at bats, & that had a lot more to do with the loss than that call, where LSU already had a one run lead. This is almost as good as beating bama, or the weenies in the olden days, on a bad call on the last play of the game. Now they can bitch & whine the rest of the season.
