I’d love for one person to logically defend how asking for the ball first at Clemson is a good idea

He would be an idiot if he takes the ball and doesn’t defer on the road

this board's obsession with the choice after the coin toss is so tiresome. It equals out.

My thought is you put your best unit on the field first to try to take control of the game from the start.

What difference is there between "defer on the road" and "defer at home"? The same rules of football are in effect, whether at home or on the road.

I understand the reasoning that if you think your offense is your best group then it benefits you to have the ball as often as possible. Thus, you take the first possession (if you can).

But I don't love taking the ball first on the road. Offense is about execution. In the first game, on the road, the home team will be energized by the crowd. That over enthusiasm can hurt the execution. On defense great effort can often carry the day. The defensive guys will be fired up. I like putting the defense on the field first.

We also.scored at the end of the 2Q then took the ball in the 2H and marched down to their 1. 1 yard away from a perfect "middle 8"

haven’t heard of the Middle Eight before but I knew what you meant in the context you used it. Interesting, I looked it up and came across a sports analytics article that says FBS level teams that won the middle eight (last 4 minutes of first half, first 4 minutes of second half) went on to win the game 74% of the time.

Without having never known these stats I always felt it was crucial game management to defer and receive the second half. Now knowing statistically how crucial this middle part of the game is it annoys me even more CBK doesn’t defer at the beginning of the game more often

Hell no. Put the defense on the field first and back them up; could get first game turnover. Get second half kickoff.

You said, 4th and goal on the 1yd line and 2 tight crossing routes….

Now you are trying say roll him out and through it to 2 tights crossing routes?
Why would you roll him out and then throw back to crossing routes in the middle of the field?
That doesn’t make sense

or you give up a score and immediately surrender momentum and play from behind.

Put your best unit on the field first.

I was agreeing with you that it may be congested so a roll out may be better so that when they cross it will be a pick and you would throw to whoever is running to the same side as the quarterback . I was agreeing with you after a good point

We went down 17-0 because of a blocked punt that should have been a penalty....

On the road defer, see what they got on Offense, on defense errybody has told us exactly who we thought they’re supposed to be, they’ve already crowned this unit.
