Or is sports so addictive that the demand is mostly inelastic?

I think we hit the peak before Covid personally.

Even college football is seeing a decline in viewership this year, that felt unheard of years ago.

No, life sucks for enough people that watching sports is about the cheapest and easiest way to make it through to the next day, plus gambling.

1990's was definitely peak college basketball. All the stars stayed 3 or 4 years.

1990's NBA sucked. Expansion made the product bad. Peak NBA was the 80's or now.

NFL is good now, they have it figured out.

College football is dying. All about money. What killed Nascar is killing football. No rivalries or traditions respected. Just chasing dollars.

I'd pump the breaks on the CFB viewership narrative until end of November. SEC views are up, Big 10 suffered from a pitiful schedule.

The simplest answer is that there are more options than ever before. Not just sports, but all of entertainment. It's getting more and more difficult to command a big audience in anything.

The NFL is one of the few entities that transcends this, but even that won't last forever. shite is always changing.

Was. Their insistence on Thursday Night Football (bad product & injuries), streaming of games on 20 different services, adding games and international games will be a big detriment. This along with the NCAA mess where kids aren’t developing and limited practice time hurting the quality of the game is making for an inferior product.

Just wait until the NFL starts adding expansion teams in Europe. Diluted talent pools plus jet lagged teams

Peak was a long time ago for me

Probably the 1990s

I actually watched NFL MLB NBA college football and college basketball regularly

I quit watching college basketball about 10 or 15 years ago and I quit watching the NBA about 10 years ago and I quit watching MLB in 2021

The only games I get excited for anymore are Saints and LSU and honestly, that’s dwindling

If you are under 50 you do not realize the decline in sports.
Football as one example.
NFL started it and it has trickled down to all other sports including college football.
Go to a game and wonder why you and 100000 others are sitting for minutes waiting for commercials to end so the game can start again.
Momentum is a huge part of the game. And this destroys it.
Play by play guys spewing 3 hours of non stop vomit and deciphering every play.
NFL used to show the stands and you could feel the atmosphere from your chair at your house.
Now you don’t even know what the stadium looks like.
Motor sports is on life support.
Too little sports is on broadcast TV.

I think this is why I started gravitating toward soccer the past decade or so. No commercial breaks. Momentum plays a huge part in the game. The games last less than two hours. I try to make it to the UK for a game or two per season, and the Gameday experience is different and so much more about the game itself than the stuff surrounding the game.

I still love my American sports. But I’ve found I watch soccer more than even football these days.

Peak has passed for the most part.

Athletes are better than ever, and the options to view on TV are peak.

In person experience isn’t as good, in part because of TV. Fan engagement opportunities aren’t there. Players are so removed from reality, and they don’t give as much of a shite about fans or winning. Money has screwed that up. Analytics has screwed up game flow for basketball and baseball. College sports is a mess.
