He hasn't underachieved, but it does seem like LSU gives up more yards between the 20s than defenses like Clemson, Alabama, etc.

It's moot point though because Aranda is VERY GOOD at red zone defense, which is what matters in the end.

Guilbeau is a tool. Aranda makes a million a year so he has underachieved. Whatever. I'll take him over anyone else. Period. He's a good fit.

Not reading GG, but given that we have had far below average (for LSU standards) d line talent for most of his tenure, I think he’s done a damn fine job.

He’s the only reason O hasn’t crashed and burned.

He's just giving out the info. These are facts. Still think he's one of the best though

He has had to work with limited talent and numbers in the DL. I expect it to get better now that the DL is deeper and will be “more aggressive”

Except the article states that it's his opinion that he's underachieved, which is asinine.

He had little to work with when he got here and he turned Duke Riley and Debo into NFL linebackers.

This year it's going to be pretty clear why he gets paid so much.

I'll say one thing though. We should have been able to stop the run better with Devin white.. I'm somewhat concerned with it for this season. Hopefully the d line will be good enough to outweigh the loss of Devin white.

I hear ya, I just meant the stats were correct and you can't argue with them. His opinion was in the title though so I see what you mean

Show me a better defense that has had a worse offense in the last 3 years.

In John Chavis' last season as LSU's defensive coordinator 2014 alone, his defense was in the top five in the nation in three major categories - No. 3 in pass defense (164.2 yards a game) and in pass efficiency defense (101.6) and No. 5 in points allowed at 17.5 a game.

Our defense in 2014 was hot garbage and benefited greatly from our ball control offense. we got abused in the trenches.

Uhhh, that's not his point. His point is we have not ranked as highly in many defensive statistics as Aranda's pay would suggest we did.

That absolutely has something to do with it.

Imagine being on a defense that has to carry the offense's water every damn game. I have no doubt that wears on them. I hope we see that change this season.

A large part of the problem has been LSU's offense - They don't put long substained drives together very often and there are two many 3 and outs - The longer your offense can stay on the field the better your defensive stats will be because the other team runs less plays and your defense can catch their breath once in a while

Not really though. He simply says that Aranda is the highest paid DC in the country and points out some deficiencies.

By definition being #1 in pay and #25 in scoring defense is underachieving.

quote:

Aranda has never had a defense at LSU finish No. 1 in the SEC in any category. He had two runner-up finishes in his first season in 2016 in rush defense (117.2 yards a game) and scoring defense (15.8 points a game) with a trio of No. 3 finishes - total defense, pass defense and pass efficiency defense.

Aranda's worst defense statistically at LSU was his last one as it failed to finish in even the top 24 in four categories - No. 38 in pass defense, No. 34 against the run, No. 26 in scoring defense and No. 25 in total defense. Those numbers were obviously distorted somewhat by the regular season finale - a seven overtime, 74-72 loss at Texas A&M in which the Tigers allowed 521 yards.

I don’t agree with Glenn but you guys freaking out over 1 article is a bit ridiculous. Especially one that’s supported by a statistical analysis. I think Dave is still one of the best DC’s in the country but let’s not act like he’s been perfect. Our defense should be top 5 in every category this year as long as there are no catastrophic injuries. He has depth and talent at all 3 levels and he’s been here for 4 years.

Here’s to Coach Aranda whipping arse and fielding a top 5 defense.

I think his defense was great in 2016. The Bama effort was awesome. Only two teams held that Bama team to under 30 points (Washington gave up 24 to them). They had 0 in the 4th quarter against LSU, but the offense was so completely pathetic and unimaginative that the defense got zero help.

Last year we were surprisingly weak against the run. They need to improve that this year. Losing Chaisson and the injuries on the D-line probably had an effect there though.
