It did? I don’t think it

Let me break it down for you. Admittedly LSU’s running backs didn’t play well, but LSU’s QB, TE and receivers did. The only group that played well for LSU’s defense was their secondary. That’s never a good thing for a defense.

With you on the BS call.
They couldn't get off the field because they did not wrap up from the opening kickoff on.
That defense would have given up 40 and been a sieve in the 4th Quarter if they weren't in top condition for an opening game.
CBK mentioned the problem tackling after (IIRC) the second full contact practice.
He said something to the tune of (paraphrasing) he was "surprised that they weren't getting guys to the ground and that was because of respect for teammates and they weren't used to finishing off the plays".

FSU was playing prevent defense and it almost cost them the game

When LSU went uptempo, FSU couldn’t stop it with any defense.

If the Offense had some long sustained drives and given the defense time to rest, early in the game, it could have been a different outcome.

These arguments are stupid. We didn’t lose “because of the offense” or “because of the defense.” We lost because of a handful of mistakes by individual players on both sides of the ball.

Yeah, it would have been nice for the defense to get off the field on third down. But you know what really fricked us on time of possession? Muffing two punt returns.

Yeah, we would have won if we scored the two times we got inside the 10 yard line. But it was individual mistakes - a bad snap, a false start on the 8 yard line, a pass in the end zone that Boutte didn’t see - that fricked us.

Even on the two 3 & out possessions, there were obvious errors that stalled us out. The first one was a bad protection call (or a missed assignment) that led to a DE coming unblocked off the right side. The second was Mason Taylor whiffing on the OLB when he pulled during a counter that would have otherwise been a really nice run to start the second half.

You can’t point to a million things that we need to get better at. I believe we will. If you want to generalize about an entire phase of the game, I think special teams is the only area where it’s really fair.

Our third possession was a 13 play, 7+ minute drive.

The D looked like what happened under miles where they eventually got tired.

The defense kept us in the game

Fla State possessions:

First half
First drive 9 plays, 46 yds, missed FG
Second drive 14 plays, 85 yds, TD
Third drive 7 plays, 17 yds, forced a punt
*we fumble the return, so it lead straight into this*
Fourth drive, 4 plays, 8 yds, we hold them on 4th and 2

Second half
first drive 14 plays, 68 yds, FG
Second drive 8 plays 57 yds TD
Third drive 12 plays 79 yds TD
Fourth drive, 4 plays- we get flagged for 15 yds on first play, moving them from 25 to 40 yd line. We then hold them to a 3 and out, forcing them to punt for only the second time.
*We fumble that punt too, leading directly to this*
3 plays, 7 yds, they fumble to us on the 1.

So, sure, the defense came up strong after 2 fumbled punts in the red zone. Fla State refused to play it safe, could have had pts, wanted TDs, and we held them.

But otherwise, our defense got mauled. 9 play drive on what should have been a FG, 14 play TD, 14 play FG, 8 play TD, 12 play TD...
We started out bad, and looked tired the whole damn game.

It did?

I don’t think it did.

LSU offense had 8 possessions.
3 TDs
2 FG attempts (one blocked)
2 punts
1 end of half

LSU on defense faced 9 Fla State possessions
3 TDs
2 FG attempts (one missed)
2 punts
1 turnover (fumble)
1 turnover (loss of downs)

Both offenses moved into scoring position 5 times, more than half the time they got the ball.

The defense is what even gave the offense the opportunity to have that great comeback at the end of the game. FSU could have easily scored again, should have. Definitely 3rd down defense needs lots of work, but overall could be quite good by games 4 or 5. Who knows it could be something like Arandas bend but don't break defense.

First possession was 8 plays and 3:19. Third possession was 13 plays and 7:17. 5th possession was 10 plays and 4:09. 6th was 15 plays and 4:57. Last was hurry up but still 11 plays. Where do you see a lack of sustained drives from the offense?

Which is a good performance from the offense and not so good from the defense.

They didn’t, 24ppg would’ve been middle of the pack for SEC defenses last season, 23ppg would’ve been 3rd worst in scoring.

Yeah anyone saying the offense outplayed the defense doesnt understand what they are looking at. We had 3 points until 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

The 5 for 11 on 3rd downs.
We had limited time of possesions because of 2 special teams tunrovers.

We are really arguing over which one had better avg game.

The funny thing is that the game didn’t end with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

That’s not really the case. The first one took away 2 minutes at the end of the first half, but that did rob them of a more realistic scoring opportunity. The second was less than a minute and didn’t take away any possession or scoring opportunities. The lack of possessions falls primarily on the defense.

The point is the ineptness of the offense the vast majority of the game.
