I was at the game and only saw the tail end of a replay on the video board. Would like to see the play. I was sitting just above the visitors tunnel. When he was going off the court into the locker room he was practically out on his feet. Definitely looked like he was concussed.

It looked like a solid screen but nothing out of the norm by Efton.

I wonder if Wheeler has some type of preexisting condition that was exposed by the collision?

I can't find the video but I remember it looking pretty harmless when it happened.. maybe I missed something.

Also, this is a real thing that someone posted on Twitter

If Sahvir Wheeler has a concussion they should vacate that game. A vicious assault resulting in an injury should result in that LSU dude never playing again. What a dirty honorless piece of shite. Standard Will Wade.

There was nothing wrong with the screen. Nothing abnormal or malicious or out of the ordinary for any typical screen.
Bilas even said so.

No idea what happened to Wheeler there, but it had nothing to do with anything Reid did

I watched it and to me it looked like wheeler tried to flop and the back of his head and neck hit the floor hard. I mean, he folded like a 20 yard shot on a duck.

Dudes chin hit ER chest dropped like a rock. Just like a perfect punch to jaw. Out like a light . Shitty coaching to not to call the screen out . Cal sucks

Every single day I read this board and think to myself, "Gosh, we have the dumbest fans ever." Then I read this, and realize it could get even worse apparently.

His own teammate set him up to get crushed by that screen. Reid did nothing even close to being wrong. A little communication on defense could have avoided that all together. He allowed Wheeler to run full speed into Reid.

My first reaction was that Wheeler was milking it or flopping for the call. After watching him basically carried off the floor, it was obvious he wasn't. Best wishes for the kid, but it was definitely a clean play.

When it happened it looked like a normal hard screen. It did not look like anything you would suffer a concussion from.

Efton was standing still setting a legal screen, Wheeler crashed right into him. Like the announcers said, totally legal play, Wheeler has to be upset at his teammates for not calling out that. That's how you know you're about to run into a screener you cant see as you're focusing on the guy with the ball.

Yeah, if I'm Wheeler I'm going to my big guy and saying "Hey bud, how about a little heads up there." You HAVE to call out screens...or that happens.

It's the equivalent of a "oooooh" hit in football, and pretty damn embarrassing when you are on the receiving end of the screen.

Nothing dirty about it. Just bad communication by UK

That makes sense. So it was just a lucky/unlucky application of energy to a very sensitive spot.

I mean if Wheeler's head is turned just a little bit he doesn't get hurt at all.

ETA: after looking at the gif it doesn't look like Wheeler's jaw hit ER.

they showed the replay several times on tv, and i honestly don't know how he got knocked out. I don't recall his head hitting Efton. And from how he stonewalled him, i expected to see Efton lean into it on the replays, but he didn't, he literally just stood still.
He without a doubt was knocked out and had no idea where he was after that screen though. He could barely walk.

I'll be honest, i can't stand when bigs go set screens like that. nothing positive can come from it. You can blame Kentucky's Oscar for not calling the screen, but as if he gives a shite about following closely enough to Efton for his guy to hear him holler out "screen" when they are on the road in a load environment. a guard doesn't need help in the open court like that and setting blind sided screens past half court when guys are running full speed like that should be illegal. I'm not saying it's bush league or anything, just that i don't think there's any reason for that screen to ever need to happen, and far too often it results in someone getting hurt.

Even from that gif I still can't see how that screen knocked Wheeler out of the game.

Was it a hard screen? Sure.

But nothing abnormal.

I understand your sentiment and it sucks that Wheeler got hurt like that but how do you make a rule change to avoid these kinds on injuries? Screens are a MAJOR part of the game. No screens on your side of the court? That wouldn't even work especially when teams are pressing and you need screens to break free.

Wheeler is pressuring Pinson up the court. It makes no difference whatsoever if Pinson "needs" the screen. The screen is alleviating the pressure. Plus, when your big sets it up that high you now have your PG in a coming down hill with the other team's big potentially having to switch on him. If you don't want to run the risk of your player getting blindsided at halfcourt then don't pressure the ball in the backcourt. Otherwise, have your big call out the screen...which is a fundamental aspect of basketball.

If UK doesn't pressure the ball full court or 3/4 court, then there is no need for Reid to come set the screen. But if that is how they choose to defend then there is NOTHING wrong with the offense doing something completely legal to counter that strategy.

EDT: Watch the play again. There are TWO Kentucky players looking right at Reid going to set the screen. Call it out! It's not like they are 50 yards away. Plus, if you are a guard pressuring the ball in the backcourt you always have to keep your head on a swivel in anticipation of a screen coming.
