It's SI, who has lost credibility the past few seasons, but this is still troubling. I think we all figured there was more to the story not being revealed and this, if true, is starting to peel away at whatever is going on.

Highly touted LSU freshman defensive tackle Travonte Valentine is still awaiting clearance from the SEC office about his high school academic standing, but he might not play this season even if he gets the go-ahead.
Valentine, who at one time was purportedly 6-3 and 325 pounds, showed up in Baton Rouge extremely overweight, according to a source. The combination of needing to lose weight and the SEC’s ongoing review of his academic credentials makes him a likely candidate to redshirt this season.
Valentine received approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse late last month, but the SEC is continuing to look into his academics from Champagnat Catholic School. He led the Miami-area program to the Florida Class 2A title last season.
Champagnat is a 247-student school for grades 6-12 and is located next to a used-car dealership. It’s drawing increased scrutiny in college football circles.
Another source familiar with Valentine’s academics is stunned that he received approval from the NCAA Clearinghouse. The source said Valentine had very few high school credits entering his junior year.
“If Travonte Valentine qualifies there’s something wrong,” the source said. “It’s not humanly possible."

He was red shirting anyway. But I can't see how the NCAA gives the green light but the SEC doesn't.

He may very well be one of those guys who reads on a elementary level that get passed through the system and end up going to college. There are tons of guys like that on big time football teams

Well damn

Why does it matter that the school is located next to a used car dealership? That detail is obviously an attempt to associate the school with dishonesty.

Would like to know that source....

He is getting screwed. This should not be allowed to happen.

Exactly what I was thinking. Shitty reporting. Plus the source is who exactly? A used car salesman?

the NCAA cleared him but the SEC hasn't because of a certain school flagged him.
don't worry, they'll get theirs in due time once he gets cleared and get's on the field.

he was around 380 when he got to campus.... my guy says it'd take a LOT of work for him to even get into football shape.... said there's not a chance that happens this season....

My problem is the NCAA cleared him, so what's the problem. If its the other way around, with the SEC clearing him, and the NCAA not, I understand the bias perception....But not this...If I'm LSU, I would be at the SEC office raising absolute Hell...

Still a weird case.. We are all well versed in the NCAA clearinghouse and the hoops these cases require programs such as ours to jump through..but the hold up by the SEC is worrisome to a degree but if they were aware of something glaring and are aware then why not get the NCAA back involved? As for the article, pretty negative slant from the weight to the unnamed source with a throw in sleazy used car jab

This is not a recipe for success with the cooking down South, unless he ate that recipe, too...

quote:I give you one Eddie Lacy - and the SEC certainly didn't hold him up like this. Screw Slive and the entire SEC office of Gumps.

Ever notice how when SI does one of their hatchet job "stories" they routinely cite one or more "undisclosed sources" that are too much of a gutless weasel to be a man and make their allegations on the record.
My guess that this time it's Gonzales over at State. He's shown the willingness to defame folks in the past.
We gotta beat the hell out of State this weekend!

I was born and raised in Miami and just graduated LSU and moved back and that is relatively new high school that I've heard of having trouble having sits athletes qualify for college, some have begun to transfer. That highly rated TE Clarington left to Booker.T Washington
