Not a shock, but still sorry to see it. Wish him the best.

Most teams probably see him as a 4th round pick. Mickey Loomis probably sees him as a top 10 pick because he’s a raw Defensive End who isn’t that good.

Why do GMs put more stock in players skipping bowl games and getting 10-15 reps in a "Senior Bowl" than players finishing out their season with their team and getting more film?

Also, I thought guys like Gaye would want to play in the bowl games to increase their stock. Why would you opt-out?

Injury risk. He’s had a couple over the last 2 seasons.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Senior Bowl is coached by pro coaches and has a ton of scouts/ coaches from NFL teams. So there's more than just the reps in the actual game.

That said, I never thought it was an either/ or thing with your bowl game and the Senior Bowl. Is there now some type of pre-Senior Bowl prep period that's more beneficial than the bowl game? Healing up some nagging injury so that you look better at the Senior Bowl?

Anytime reps are controlled in a practice environment, the risk of injury decreases substantially. As someone said earlier, the practice week is where most of the evaluation takes place at the Senior Bowl. The game is irrelevant. Most scouts leave and don’t even stick around for the game. The coaches there want to see how you respond to coaching and how quickly you can absorb new information and translate it to your play.

Man. Who'll make up for all those plays he almost makes every game?

The senior bowl is all about the reps in practice, the game is an afterthought. The senior bowl is basically a pro-day stretched out over a week. A senior going into the draft does way more for themselves at the senior bowl than playing in a bowl game.

I think it has been established that NFL GM's do not care about bowl games.

People need to stop melting over this every year. It's a blessing for the coaching staff. Especially one like we have assembled now. You're about to see some young elite talent on the field.

Deleted because if you have nothing nice to say, you should say nothing at all.

This is one downside to being NFLSU. We will get more opt outs than most. The benefit is more players in the NFL will keep the top talent coming here. However, this will result in even more opt outs in the future.

It is a vicious cycle, but overall a good thing.

Probably shouldn’t have played the last few games either, when it was clear he was high draft pick quality. Shouldn’t take that risk to your future!
