Spurrier is the best pure coach in the SEC. Gameday coaching and prep, he does them very well.

Quite a few '13 Ole Mrs in there, I'd say.

vs '13 UTk 21-23
vs '11 AU 13-16
vs '10 UK 28-31
vs '08 Vandy 17-24
vs '07 Vandy 6-17

The grass is always greener, unless you're Coach Les Miles.

Idk why you would pick Spurrier over Miles. He hasn't even won the SEC in the last 8 years.
Miles went 4-7 in 2001 and only 7-5 in 2004. During that span, Miles lost to Southern Miss, Iowa State, Colorado, Louisiana Tech, and Texas Tech.
The only bowl game he won was against Southern Miss in the Houston Bowl.
Miles is a terrible coach, right?

ETA: Before Spurrier arrived, USC had a losing record all-time.
In his 8th year at USC, Spurrier has a 66 percent (76-39) winning percentage. He’s won nearly twice as many as he’s lost at that program.
Spurrier has taken USC to 8 bowl games in 10 years
Previously the South Carolina program went to 14 bowls in 60 years.
He has three of the six bowl victories in the history of the program.
He won the program’s first-ever SEC East title
He won the program’s first-ever victory at The Swamp
He won the program’s first-ever victory over a No. 1 team
He has the best-ever season in program’s history (2011)
That year marked the first time in program history to beat Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and Clemson, in consecutive seasons.

What he has done at USC is a minor miracle. I'd split my spleen at anyone who tried to tell me Miles could have done the same.
If anyone could have equalled what Spurrier has done at USC it would be Saban. But I don't think Saban would have the balls to try it.

He's going to have South Carolina finishing in the top 10 for the third year in a row. It will be their 4th top 25 finish in a row, for a program that only had 5 top 25 finishes in their history before he arrived. He's doubled the programs bowl victory count. He's on pace for his third 11 win season in a row. All of this at a program that has been a lifelong doormat.

You don't even need to count his experience at Florida to realize that he is an exceptionally good coach, and I would love to see what he could do with the talent at LSU. He's certainly not without his flaws, but then neither is Les Miles.

If head-to-head match ups were the only criteria for whether one coach is better than another then I guess Hugh Freeze is at least as good as Les and Dabo Swinney is even better.

The answer is Spurrier.

He dominated the league with a high octane offense and a solid defense.

Then completely changed his style to a power running game and great defense.

He knows how to win.

I mean he made freaking South Carolina a top ten team.

Spurrier, mercy is for the weak.

Spurrier at UF was a viscous bastard. The AU game this year wouldn't have been 35-21, it would have been 48-10.

Spurrier EASILY. Miles is great, but Spurrier at his peak was top 3 all time IMO. If Spurrier had Louisiana's talent and Frank Wilson, he'd be killing it as much or more than Miles right now I think. I love Miles though and do not want him to leave. Our fans are too fricking spoiled to realize how good we have it.

Look at the facts. Saban won 4 NC at 2 schools in a 10 yr span despite being out of college football 2 of said yrs. I think you have a distorted point of view.

I'll take Miles. Hated Spurrier while he was at Florida, but he's ok now and funny as heck.

Spurrier revolutionized college offenses for a while. Was one of the first to pass much more than throw and did it successfully. but he neglected his defense and running game and it cost him a few games. He's underrated on this board because some of this crowd is too young to remember him dominate the 90's strictly with his offensive schemes and playcalling.

Saban brough an NFL type defensive scheme to the college level, more complicated, more blitzing. Other teams have followed. He used to be too conservative on offense but he's opened it up later in his career. He's a much better coach now than when he started at LSU.

Miles is as good a program manager as either but nowhere close with x's and o's. Seems his players like him better than both of the others. Probably would be the most fun to play for.

If i could choose from all 3 in their primes: Saban>Spurrier>> Miles

Not true. They played UT,and Florida State every year, and usually Alabama in the SECCG. All 3 won national titles in the 90's. And Florida would blow teams out weekly. They were head and shoulders above the rest of the SEC during that time, but the SEC was still really good.

I just want to see a presidential debate type thing that features spurrier, miles, leach, and the former coastal carolina coach.

Is that too much to ask?

All at their primes? Spurrier in a heartbeat. Before him, Florida only had 1 SEC championship, and that was vacated. He came in and won 5 SEC titles in 6 seasons, and a national title (this during a time when the SEC teams weren't anywhere near the level of the national powers. It would be sort of like if someone went to Purdue in the Big 10, totally took over the conference, and won a BCS title now). Probably the biggest reason the SEC became as strong as it is now, is because Florida set the bar so high. Used to be, if you were top 10, you likely could win the conference. The Gators changed that, and teams like Tennessee became national powers while trying to challenge. That, in turn, led the rest of the conference "big teams" to follow suit.

Then, South Carolina- that program had a losing record, overall. About on the lines of Kentucky or so, and he's elevated them to annually being among the best in the East, winning 11 games, etc.

In comparison, Saban came to LSU, a school with a respectable history and a good number of SEC titles, and pushed them to annually competing for the West. In the process he won a BCS title and 2 SEC titles. Then went to Alabama, the school which historically dominated the SEC with most wins, titles, etc, and pushed them back to annually competing for the West. He has more BCS titles than SEC titles.

tl,dr version- Spurrier did a hell of a lot more.

Spurrier is no brainer ( which is somewhat ironic cause I'm pretty sure around two years ago Les donated his brain to science).

Napolen is no brainer also.

Nice try OP but you made it far too easy.

Let's up the ante.

Don't get all bent out of shape on me if I'm off by a year or so or the team cause that really has nothing to do with the question or the answer. The problem is it's lot harder to find historical game by game attendance records than I thought. I played around on Google but I don't even think LSUsports.net has the actual game by game numbers that far back.

In September 1983 LSU hosted Washington. Jerry Stoval and the Tigers spanked em. Everyone wanted to go cause it's rare to play a PAC Ten team. We had narrowly lost the season opener to FSU. And beat Rice in Houston.
So everyone figured we had a good team. It was beautiful warm day game, I remember it like it was yesterday. OK here we go:

It set the all time attendance record. Despite all the great games since then that record stood for years until the East side Stadium expansion.

Why? The most specific answer is the winner.

You realize the SEC was a weaker conference nationally and didn't have nearly the balance during the Spurrier time and the SEC is a much stronger conference with much more balance during the Les time.

Two NC in the 11 year period of Steve for the SEC and maybe eight in the nine year period for Les.

It's a toss up!

yes, that is true. At that time, we played a 11 game schedule, the SEC winner usually was 9-2, and there were several others at 8-3. But... you're not taking into account something important: Florida was not in that group. They were going to be between 5-6 to 7-4, behind Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU. The only time they got above that, they went on probation.

Spurrier came in and started owning everyone, every fricking year. He raised the SEC champ from a national also-ran to a legit contender, and won a title. He ripped the SEC away from everyone else. He didn't do this from an established team, he did this from the outside.
