A look at Alabama's QB production
Posted on 11/1/18 at 1:42 pm
Posted on 11/1/18 at 1:42 pm
Claim:
Tua isn't as great as the world makes him out to be. Alabama's entire offense makes him look good (plus they've played shitty teams).
Facts:
QBs
2017:
Hurts - CMP% 60.6 YDS/A 8.19 TD 17 INT 1 RAT 150.7
Tua - CMP% 63.6 YDS/A 8.26 TD 11 INT 2 RAT 175
2018:
Hurts - CMP% 73.6 YDS/A 11.11 TD 5 INT 2 RAT 190.5
Tua - CMP% 70.4 YDS/A 13.59 TD 25 INT 0 RAT 238.8
Team
2017 opponent pass defense rankings (YDS/A):
Florida St - 6th
Fresno St - 20th
Colorado St - 89th
Vanderbilt - 61st
Ole Miss - 81st
A&M - 78th
Arkansas - 115th
Tennessee - 54th
LSU - 24th
Miss St - 80th
Auburn - 7th
Clemson - 4th
Georgia - 2nd
Average - 47.77
2018 opponent pass defense rankings (YDS/A):
Louisville - 114th
Ark St - 89th
Ole Miss - 100th
A&M - 116th
ULL - 119th
Arkansas - 110th
Missouri - 109th
Tennessee - 92nd
Average - 106.13
Explanation:
They haven't even played an average pass defense. You see a significant improvement for both players from 2017 to 2018. More than just year to year improvement for an individual. I think it's pretty obvious what's going on here and people need to chill on the Tua greatness BS.
And if you say "Well those rankings are after Bama played them" These are based on averages, if those teams had average pass defenses, they wouldn't be ranked in the 100s. By the way, Alabama is 5th in pass yds/game - Ole Miss is 4th, and Ole Miss has played better teams (including Alabama).

Awkward
You keep digging a hole with your awful hot taeks on Tua. There exists a world where Tua can actually be an elite QB and LSU still have a chance to win the game. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
You're just searching for anything to cling to because you can't wrap your mind around that point.

Tua is really good. And the bama O is really good.
But, bama’s strength of schedule is 60. That includes this game! They are good but this game will be close.

Fact: Tua led a second half comeback last year on the biggest stage in the National championship against Georgia as a freshmen.
Fact: Tua has been throwing dimes all over the field in the first half.
Fact: Tua has not thrown an interception
Because they havent played our schedule does not make Tua overrated.
To have that opinion is just that an OPINION not a FACT.

There would be no talk of this if they hadn't played high school defenses all year.

Only by people who
1) Haven't watched Alabama this year
2) Were doing something else during the national title game last year
Tua will be the #1 overall draft pick in two years barring massive injury. He's the best QB in college football
After 6 starts this season, Bill Connelly took the last 10 Heisman winning QBs and compiled each of their /BEST/ 6 games and Tua smashed them all statistically. Those games include tons of garbage teams.
Tua's first 6 games as a starter were better than any combination of 6 games played by each of the last 10 Heisman winning QBs. But sure, he's terrible.

What makes you think this?
Have you never heard of receiver separation? Bama's WRs are good and fast. Against these horrible DBs playing zone defense, it's nothing for Bama WRs to get 5+ yards of separation. Being able to do that allows the WR to adjust to the ball in the air (as long as Tua doesn't over-throw it, which is what he is actually good at - he doesn't overthrow). Tua under-throws a lot, but it's ok because the WR is yards ahead of the DB.

You keep saying this, but it took me all of 3 mins to put together a list of throws that absolutely counter this narrative.
Also, did you happen to catch the game winning throw in the title game last year?

Those games of the Heisman winning QBs included garbage teams is what I was saying.

If I were an LSU fan, I'd just admit the guy is phenomenal.
Then,
If you win, you beat a phenomenal QB.
If you lose, at least it was to a phenomenal QB.
All this talk about him not really being great just makes me think you don't think your team can beat Bama if he is.

Tua is a very good Qb. Here is what he did against the one good defense that he played in Georgia.
14 of 24, 58.3%, 166 yd, 6.9, 3 tds 1 int 149.35.
I know Georgia didn't prepare for him or have film on him and one of those TD was on a short field in OT and one was thrown to a different guy and was pure luck, but that doesn't mean his is not very good. He is not the superman he looks like against that pathetic pass defenses he played so far, but he is very good.

I absolutely think we can beat Bama. A lot of people doubt LSU because Bama's offense is "so great" and they "only play one half". Well I sure hope so against the teams they're playing.
As much as it's been stated on here, I don't think it's stated enough. People shrug it off as "cherry-picking stats". Uh, no, it's a hell of a lot worse than that. It's worse than if Bama were to play in the Sun Belt conference. If a team down there were blowing up every team in they played, you wouldn't hear about them - now throw Bama's talent into that conference.

On 24 attempts. Most of his completions were either behind the LOS or within 10 yards of the LOS. The energy Tua brought was awesome and his poise was epic but if you look at his mid-range passing results in that game it was pretty average.
