One of the announcers commented on Daronte Jones yesterday, something that stood out to me.
Said he brought in an "NFL mentality", approaching the players with:
How can I make you better?

This is fine- with NFL players. Those guys know what they're doing, know what they do well and what they lack, and tend to know how best to succeed.
With college kids, especially younger ones, it's a mistake. These guys need to be developed and taught. They DON'T know, for the most part, where they are weak. Look at the linebackers, they're desperately in need of being coached up. Same with the safeties.

I don't know if it's just something they worded poorly, but it raised some flags for me. LSU has a lot of talent, but most college guys are raw as hell.

I’m holding judgement for the end of the season. Just want to see improvement. We saw a step in the right direction last night

I think at this point in his career, Andre Anthony can understand where and how he can get better. Incoming freshmen, not so much.

Anthony is 3 years older than some NFL rookies.

It's pretty evident that includes identifying weaknesses.

First and foremost it means, like the NFL, being hyper-critical of individual performance. That knife cuts both ways by the way- you can have a bad game in a big win and you recieve a bad grade and criticizm. You can have a great game statistic wise and still be subject to the same criticizm.

It's focus on the individual. If ALL the individuals perform better and improve the effort to translate that into a better group is minimal.

And that's the key in CFB- you have so little time to practice, the most efficient way to improve a groupd is to improve the individual first. If you start with the group, and there's too many weak links you are fighting an uphill battle that takes much more time and effort to get to the same place. Noting that defense and offense have to be handled differently.

Now, to your point- I think we are seeing the effect of this. It is why we see guys like Clark have great games while overall the defense performed poorly. Players individually performing well but blown assignments and such. I'm thinking of the UCLA game specifically. Like all things there needs to be balance. And they didn't focus enough on the group before facing Chip Kelly who knows how to confuse a defense.

Is that why the defense has looked better each game? Because he doesn’t know how to coach?

While what you are saying is true...

We don’t pay this coaching staff top 5 money in the country to lose early in the year and show some improvement by the back end. What we saw the first two weeks of this season was a fireable offense.

Your program can’t be starting over every, single year like we have been doing under Orgeron. Where is the continuity?

Kind of hard to have continuity if you're firing coaches after 2 games.

This Defense is light years ahead of where we where 3 games into last year. I see a Defense that is going to get better, if LSU can stay healthy. Need Ward back at Safety although Lewis #31 is playing solid ball. Major Burns has ability and is getting better, but like Ward to get back out there.

Overall, we’ve seen signs of improvement from UCLA to now. Need to continue.

Now, with that said, how Major Burns gets confused in cover 2 and floats to the opposite end of the field to give up a 70+ yard TD pass on 3rd and 12…..sheeeesh

It’s hard to compare this year to last year. We didn’t really have any cupcakes (outside of vandy) for the defense last year. We definitely have taken a step in the right direction but it’s hard to say we’re light years better before starting SEC play, and the one good offense we played shite all over us

I think the schedules are comparable. Vandy is not much better than McNeese, in fact they lost to East TENN State an FCS team this year. UCLA is better than State or Mizzou and Central Michigan maybe not quite as good, but they did battle MIZZOU in week one, it was a 27-24 in 4th QTR and MIZZOU scored late to make it 34-24.

So I think this Defense is much better, and playing faster with more effort and look less confused. Not saying perfect, but moving in the right direction. I never felt that way about Last years Defense at all.
