re: A Letter From Joe Alleva about night games.

Between giving up night football and charging fans to park & tailgate, this guy has shown he has no feel for our traditions. If Alleva can't negotiate a better deal for us, he needs to get the hell out-I agree 100% I am dumbfounded that there will not be another night game this season. I feel that playing is tradition for LSU, a long standing tradition that is known by all if our SEC brethren, now CBS or any network wants to showcase the 1 team. But because of this does not mean we devalue our longest standing tradition just to abide by the contract. Whoever agreed to the contract did not fight hard enough to maintain a night game tradition at LSU. Poor negotiating by whomever at LSU. My point is we say look night games or we don't sign and you don't get LSU. Of course they need LSU so they would cave in.

If sec Saturday night games got better ratings than the other shows they show at 7pm on Saturdays, don't you think they'd drop the mentalist and show LSU vs. whoever?
People are getting paid a lot of money to make these decisions that will make their network the most money possible.

I know you think you know a lot, but I will guarantee to you that there are people who make a LOT of money and who have been doing this for a LOT of years who make decisions about programming at major networks. CBS shows what they show on Saturday night for a reason. And that reason is based on ratings. If they honestly thought college football at 7 pm EVERY Saturday night would make them more money, then that is what they would do. But ESPN is also a partner and ESPN has rights to Saturday night games as well, so CBS and ESPN and the SEC have to compromise.
What you doofuses need to realize is that the current TV model has been in place for a number of years now and it makes EVERYONE a ton of money...from the networks to the league to the schools themselves. The contract is NOT going to change merely because LSU wants night games and Alleva would be a fool to try to tinker with it or raise hell about it, mainly because he would get shot down handily. My advice: deal with it or find another team to root for.
You lost me when you said I was a part of some group of our fanbase. I'm GFunk. I'm only speaking for myself and how I related to his message.
You also lost the plot completely when you indicated that folks were saying that they should show prime-time games EVERY Saturday Night.
I'm not saying that at all, so why you quoted me I'm not sure, but you've basically put words in my mouth, which while I don't appreciate, does bemuse me on several levels.
Whether from the perspective that shows you can't read very well, or critically think in an effective manner. Either way, you are doing a poor job of keeping up, not to mention attributing arguments to people they didn't make for the purposes of creating a straw man to take down makes you look pretty foolish.
What's truly ironic is that you've not-so-subtly denigrated folks intelligence when in reality, you're the one whose had quite a time of keeping track here.
Try again next time, Champ.

You're right, they have the contract with the SEC as it currently stands. But what about when we add A&M? And if we add a 14th?
CBS did not add a team to the SEC. The SEC did this. If I am CBS I don't care if you add one or twelve teams. I have a contract. I strongly suspect they have T's and C's to cover expansion anyway. You don't just throw out a contract because the SEC structure has changed. This is grasping at straws.

I have news for some of you. Bitching and complaining is how you get heard and how you attempt to influence a change. If it were up to a lot of you, we'd be pacifists and not press anything. Do you ever question, request or press anyone for anything, or do you just simply fall in line and chastise others for not being silent and walking in line? Contracts are renegotiated daily, contracts are NOT set in stone; they are amended through give and take. I'm watching Carson Palmer being traded to the Raiders. We are watching Texas A&M move to the SEC. Things change when people aren't happy. LSU is a valuable product. If LSU fans really want their night games, they should continue to press the AD. And we also should make our request known, consistently, to CBS and the SEC.
I also agree that the AD's letter would have been better if he would have said that he was taking up our cause, instead of simply explaining the situation.
I don't know if I'd make CBS the entire enemy. I think the main problem is 2 TV organizations vying for the same product. They are putting limits on each other. The SEC wants coverage, CBS and ESPN want the SEC, a better deal can be struck, and there are multiple ways to do it. Fans are just requesting ONE night game.
I’m sure CBS would like to have another option for a night game during the season, but they would have to give up something for it. This is where the SEC holds the power in honoring the requests and traditions of its members.
A lot of you are right though, even with the existing contract, we could have had our one night game, but Florida-Alabama seemed a good matchup at the time for CBS, and on top of that, a lot of our SEC opponents are not as strong this year so many options are not that alluring. On top of that, we are the #1 team in the nation and so CBS is loving us.
Keep requesting. Keep complaining. Maybe next year they will give more consideration to accommodate us.

Exactly, but bitching right now imploring Joe to move the Auburn game to ESPN is asinine.

it is difficult to get +90k people on campus for a 2:30 game, moreso now that the parking situation is hampering traffic. non-sec schools, and smaller sec schools don't have to deal with this. it's a big deal

Exactly. I hate day games because they mess with tailgating. But I understand that comes with the territory of being #1.

I also wonder how many of you who are indifferent even go to the games.
I have been to about 90% of the games over the last 20+ years. I have no problem with playing at 2:30, especially in late October and November when it is cold.

I haven't missed a home game since starting at LSU in August 2004.

maybe some of these "LSU fans" should take off the purple and gold, put on red and what ever other color, and go root for ULL. I think they play at night.

I have come to the conclusion our fans are stupid. "Night games barwwrraaarrr"

Definitely....that is not a gonna happen, and not worth the effort.
A change couldn't happen until next year, but the concerns for the cause should be presented now and continue. I want LSU to continue its dominance, and of course, continue to receive coverage and notoriety. AND I want more experiences like Auburn 2007, Florida 2007....night games in Tiger Stadium.

Does anyone else find it humorous that the two folks who went out of their way to belittle folks on the other side of their viewpoint's relative level of intelligence both have issues with things as simple as reading comprehension & spelling?

Ohh come on man :) you don't like going in Fall weather? A Fall game at night is one of my favorite things. I personally hate going to a FB game at 2:30 in the afternoon, in the middle of the Aug-Oct heat. Nevertheless, go to a game when I've only had half a day to tailgate.

Dude chill out. I wasn't attributing my whole post to you. Think what you want to think...I don't care. At least one person somewhere did post that he thought CBS should carry SEC games EVERY Saturday night...my response was to that person. Trust me, I can hold my own in a reading comprehension battle. The bottom line is what I was trying to get across in my post...the current contract makes a lot of people a lot of money and there is no way any of it gets changed just because LSU wants to play at night. That is indisputable, no matter how much people want to bitch about it.
