Your expression is like you're posing next to a trophy fish...

I was a bring mac back chanter in 79. Good thing I was only 12 or I might have been tossed off the 2nd level of the south endzone
Mac said after he left that he would be long gone by the time someone broke his wins record at LSU and he's certainly been proven right. I've always saw some Mac in Les Miles actually, integrity, being one self etc...Mac meant alot to his players and LM seems the same as well

I love the posts bitching about stuff like this. I just don't have the freakin' imagination to be so insanely negative.

That is wild. I would of been stunned myself not knowing he was buried there.
Coach Mac got one of his first coaching jobs at Kentucky from the Bear. Same with Paul Dietzel. We bitch about the Bear but he furthered at least two coaching careers that benefited LSU.

I'm glad that I was a student when Charlie Mac roamed the sidelines and coached the game. It was an awesome sight to witness the affection displayed by the Bear and Charlie Mac after they coached against each other. You could easily see the mutual respect that the two had for each other. For you people who are bitching about the Bear being on Charlie Mac's headstone, I pray to God that you are kids who don't know any better or the history those two men shared with each other. I can't speak for Charlie Mac but I bet he was honored to have the name of his good friend on his head stone. FYI, Charlie Mac did beat the Bear sometimes even though those victories were rare. I was actually able to witness one of those rare moments back in '69.

Sorry guys, from now own I will carry an LSU flag, fresh purple and yellow roses, and a gravestone cleaning kit with me in case I happen to find any more legendary LSU coaches graves in tiny graveyards in south Arkansas.
I'm smiling in the picture because I was shocked and excited to come across this. I was 2 years old when he left LSU but I had read a lot about him. It made my day.
Thanks to you older guys for sharing your Coach Mac stories. I enjoyed reading more about who he was.

Knowing Mac and his love for the Bear, it wouldn't surprise me if, out of all the awards he ever won, he was proudest of that one.
Mac loved The Bear the way Les loves Bo.
He was proud of it and of his friendship with Coach Bryant. Bryant coached Cholly Mac when he was at Kentucky and the two remained friends until Bryant's death.

Honestly...I don't know shite about their relationship. I was just joking around. I'm glad to hear that they were good friends because I only know it always gets brought up that he could never beat the Bear.

Thanks for the story and the pic. Coach Mac was a great coach, an even finer gentleman and ALWAYS a true LSU Tiger.
It still saddens me to remember how he was treated in his last days at LSU.

If you haven't read "It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium", by John Ed Bradley, I can recommend it for the Coach Mac parts alone. Many on this board have also recommended, though some feel it is too dark.
One of my favorite parts is a reference to Coach Mac's response to the "Help Mac Pack" campaign. In his final days as coach, he said (I'm paraphrasing):
I see all of these signs, "Help Mac Pack", well I'm here, I'm packing and nobody's helping me.
The fact is that he could have easily turned his back on the program based on the way he was treated - he's not from Louisiana, didn't play for LSU, just coached for us for 26 years. He could have treated it as just another job and moved on. He didn't. That's why I never treat Coach Mac as "just another coach". We all owe him that much, at least.

uh.. Cholly Mac and Bear were very good friends...

Great story. Try to ignore the negative wise-crackers. It's sad to see so many people with such useless lives.

Thanks for the story!
With all due respect - this is for the "you shoulda" posters...
(cleaned, flowered, and virtually "Bear-free")

Didn't get to see much LSU football on TV back then. Used to stay up on Sunday nights just to watch the Charlie Mac show and the highlights of the Sat. night game. The old radio announcer used to do the show with him. Burger King I think was a big sponser back in that era. One of the commercials he would tell his receivers to think the football was a whopper. Good times. Where in S.Arkansas is that graveyard.

This pic really made me stop and think.
Have to tell one of my mother's favorite LSU stories. It was 1977 and I was 13 and sitting with my sister (14) in the south endzone upper deck. The beligerent drunk behind us started yelling that LSU should fire McClendon. I turned around and told him he should have more respect for one of the greatest coaches LSU had ever known. The guy shut up after the crowd around me applauded.
