ERA's look bad relative to these days, but that was a solid staff in 97. Clutch MF'ers.

If you looked at ERA's of the top pitchers in the country during that time, majority were probably in the 3s and 4s...so yes, that was a pretty solid group.

was thinking the same thing, but I wonder if you project Nola and Eades out to a full schedule including ALL of Omaha until the championship game if it would be similar.

Barbier was a freshman in 97.

K/9 Innings

Thompson - 11.4
Coogan - 10.4
Painich - 8.4

Nola - 10.5
Eades - 8.5
Glenn - 3.7

Nola and Eades are great strikeout pitchers, but you're right...Thompson and Coogan could mow them down.

Thompson and Coogan had so much energy on the mound. I loved the live bat era, it was so damn exciting. Strikeouts and HR's all day

For comparsion, the SEC team with the best ERA in 1997 was Auburn at 4.31

Understandable. He actually WAS a veteran leader on the '00 championship team, though.

I actually heard Charlie compare Barbier to Ibarra while listening the other night. Pretty solid comparison IMO. Shorter guys, solid hitters, converted middle infielders.

He also played 2nd base in '97 not 3rd. McClure played 3rd.

Correct again, I know he finished his career at 3rd...guess my memory isn't serving me as well as I thought.

Keep in mind that the 97 team hit an ncaa record 181 homeruns. We can look at batting avg and obp and say "too close to call" bu. The slugging pct is a lot different due to all of the hrs

Precisely why I didn't include HRs. With those "hitter friendly" bats, if you were sitting in the outfield bleachers, you probably caught more balls than the catchers. In '97 we had 8 starters who hit double digit HRs...if they were using these whiffle ball bats, I doubt LSU would have had more than 2 in double figures. I'm not taking anything away from that '97 team, but we all know the game has changed a lot since then and HRs are no longer a dime a dozen.

I hated these bats more than anyone the first season.
They are starting to grow on me some now.
I'd rather them use the 2010 bats (no composites allowed),
but if they switch to the pro ball, like they are talking about, I could be pretty happy with that.

You and me both. I think I hated more how coaches across the country overreacted and went bunt crazy the first year or so.

I actually much rather the game the way it is being played now. Coaches are trusting players to swing it a little more while still playing some small ball. HR derbies are fun for a while, but I much prefer watching guys leg out doubles and triples (a la Bregman) than watching 5-8 balls a game leave the park.

Agree again, don't think the second switch was really necessary.

Thompson, Ainsworth, Shipp, and Coogan were some solid pitchers. Larson and Furniss were two of the best ever. It's crazy to think our numbers are better this year.
