Bleacher Report sent out an alert about it to everyone listed as an LSU football fan on their app.

I’ve volunteered with a local food pantry that sounds like it operates similar to this one in Athens and what everyone has done with this movement is unbelievable. Everyone who donated really did a great job here and especially being just in time for Christmas makes it really special.

My wife raised a decent question. What about the local food pantries? I think we will reach out to our local food bank that I've worked with in the past and see what we can do. Hopefully this movement extends past Athens and encourages people to get involved with their own communities!

This has been mentioned many many times in this thread. With links to BTR food pantry, LSU food pantrt, and Northshore Food Bank.

There is nothing about donating to Athens that keeps you from donating locally, where ever that may be.

This is tiger fans' way of showing our appreciation to Joe.

Poverty rate twice the national average.

This has been explained in this thread already. Coal country. Limited jobs. Unemployment/underemployment. Poor regional economy.

A lot of historical reasons. What was difficult for me to understand is that Appalachia extends all the way into southern Ohio. This county is in the hill country near the border with West Virginia. I don’t think of Ohio as southern, and it isn’t, but areas are still very poor. These areas were timber, then coal and some oil production areas that don’t have any other industry. The industrialized areas of the north have better shipping and transportation access. This area is kind of isolated from that.

Think West Virginia. Not much different than central La or southwest Miss.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread everyone should read Hillbilly Elegy a 2016 bestseller that discusses this in depth.

Another is Jim Webb’s 2004 Born Fighting about how the Scots-Irish shaped America and came through Appalachia. You will learn a great amount about the regions in both of these books.

And I gave to both BR and Athens yesterday, forwarded the links to my California family and they have donated to their own and Athens as of 5:00 am this morning.

This fundraiser is also making people look local too, many of the FB comments show that is happening. Tiger Nation once again showing the world how fun it can be to give to others!

Why are we donating to Athens County? There are much poorer counties in Louisiana. The first Parish I tried, Washington Parish, has a $31,000 median income compared to Athens' $37,000. And none of the poor people in Athens had anything to do with Joe Burrow coming to LSU.

This is one of those odd, irrational, sentimental reactions that are typical of mob behavior.

Start one for a food pantry in Louisiana and we’ll donate there too.

The “our poor is better than their poor” mentality is fricking dumb.

A sense of hopelessness has taken over a lot of that surrounding area. TONS of drug use
