Buzz was about to get fired 3 years ago but then A&M went on that miraculous SECT run where they beat the crap out of #1 Auburn and were barely snubbed from the NCAAT and they gave him another year. He’s been good since then but before that he was extremely underwhelming, especially considering he took over a program that was coming off 2 Sweet 16s in 3 years.

Buzz had a track record. And won 21 sec games in his first 3 seasons (one of which was covid)

Matt isn't built for this league. Bad coaches can make the tournament, we can't even get on the bubble.

Buzz Williams was a very good hire at Texas A&M

Williams was like Mulkey. The big draw wasn’t the program. It was the home state (Williams is a Texas native)

Matt McMahon was hired because they had to find somebody and nobody wanted the job

I don’t buy that. McMahon had a better resume than Todd Golden (Florida) did at San Francisco. In fact, McMahon had just beaten Golden in the NCAAT. That’s not to say Golden would have chosen LSU over Florida, but this ABSOLUTELY wasn’t a situation where LSU had to just take what they could get. Remove the hindsight glasses and look at the other SEC coaches hired that cycle…McMahon had a better resume than most.

Unfortunately, Woodward didn’t see beyond the resume and it hasn’t worked out. That happens. Continuing on with the mistake is the problem

What are you talking about? He took over a program that had missed the NCAA tournament 2 out of the previous 3 seasons. And the season before he took over they were terrible. His only bad season at A&M was the covid season.

That’s a big part of the rehire WW drumbeat. Fans rightfully don’t think Woody can make a good basketball hire so they just want to bring WW back because it’s safe and sure.

Was he on the hot seat? I know he got hit with a bunch of violations like 1 or 2 years into his tenure but I must have missed ATM maybe wanting him gone.

Wow! Worse even than it seems. Didn’t think that was possible.

A&M made the Sweet 16 in 2016 and 2018. I guess I made an error by ONE year big deal!

What year was he on the hot seat? Did it have to do with him getting hit with sanctions?

That and he’s one of the top 2-3 coaches available.

I was under the impression that they were pretty pissed off with his performance in February 2022 which was the end of his third season at A&M and they had been pretty mediocre coming off Kennedy who was a great coach there. However, like I said they put together a nice run at the end of the year and went off in the SEC Tournament and haven’t really looked back since.
