Yep was at that one too - and the ‘86 Miami OH and Ole Miss debacles too. A&M & ND games that year were wild wins. Fun times in the student section except for the outcomes sometimes!

The uncomplimentary hand gesture was the following season in the Miami Ohio fiasco.
I stand corrected.

I was there and the walk on the concourses was so weird. No one celebrating. Just a low hum of people mumbling.

From where I sat, it looked like the field goal split the uprights.
I still think he made it.
They had the shorter uprights back then. Made it harder to tell.

Ronnie Lewis was a great high school kicker.
He lived in New Orleans East and played at Abramson.
He was crushing 50 yarders in high school, so he was a prospect, but the bright lights of the college game was not something he was comfortable with.
He was a live wire.
Good times

I think it was Garry James and Dalton Hilliard did some handoff on the kickoff and ran it to at least midfield. LSU moved right down and should have tried for a TD as Alabama was gassed.
He had a very sharp angle on the left hashmark and somehow missed the kick wide right. It was a hell of a slice. And that was kicking with the wider goalposts before they made them NFL size a few years later.

There truly is not team in the history of sport that consistently gets the lucky bounces, favorable flags, and flat out miracles that Bama routinely gets late in games. It’s maddening.
The small handful of things that go against Bama, such as the kick-6, stick out in our minds bc they’re so rare.
I recall the 1998 game at tiger stadium where Bama miraculously came back from a 16-7 deficit with just a couple minutes left.

Had it won, 14-7 but they made a 4th and 19 conversion and then did a halfback pass to Mike Shula to make it 14-13.
A very typical late-game sequence for the supernaturally lucky Bama

Note that the Reveille refers to it as a "field goald" attempt.
Nice proofreeding.
