I was with him until we started rushing 3 and then continued to rush 3 whilst getting picked apart.

LB play was impressive
At least the S were in better position this year compared to last - Coleman and Jones were lost last year
DL talent is disturbing but that is more a reflection on Miles/Lane than Chavis
When will LSU switch to 3/4 to compensate for lack of talent on dline? that seems to be the new trend

With that said, the Texas DL is not dominant either but Muschamp seems to get pressure

No. There was pressure, there were just no sacks. The QB always escaped the rush and made a throw. We didn't try to disrupt the throw or get in his face, we ran full speed right at the QB who would always just take 3 steps to the side and escaped the rush.

I hope this is something Miles addresses. We have to stop letting the QB escape the pocket.

I do not think a passive defense is the answer to any problems. Just ask a Tennessee fan. It reminds me of Lou Tepper all over again. Look at what an agressive defense like Alabama or Nebraska does to opponents. He is not the answer.

Saw way too much of it this year. I don't think our LBing talent is all that great, and our D line was not our strong point, but DAMN you take our secondary and play ten yards off the ball on a third and three and it seemed to equal first down.

It also led to our defense being on the field way too long. It takes opportunity and consistency away from the offense.

Third down efficency:
Alabama 29.38
Florida 30.17
Mississippi 30.73
Auburn 33.73
Tennessee 34.12
Arkansas 36.02
Georgia 36.20
Mississippi St. 36.36
South Carolina 36.63
LSU 36.76
Vanderbilt 38.34
Kentucky 39.66

It's better than what we had last year, but that is pathetic and I hate this defense.

Bottom line. The defense played well enough to win every game. 13 points to the Gators-Offense let the team down. Alabama- Great defensive play, maybe the best of the year, wiped out by a horribly incompetent officiating crew, thus denying the offense a chance to win the game. Ole Mrs- Team mismanagement on offense lost the game though the defense did give up too many yards. Anyway, Chief's defense did not lose any games and that is a big improvement.

Amen!! AS physical as our DBs are, we should be jamming the WR at the LOS.

That and the blown PP play when Mccluster threw the TD. The game should have never come down to us having to score on the final drive. So I would put more on the D for that loss though the other 2 Ls were definately O.

3rd and chavis defiantly exist. 3rd and 20 vs arky with the game on the line = arky first down bc of prevent d on 3rd down

For the first year under a new coach, I thought things well pretty good. Now that the team has had a year of work with him, I would expect improvement next year. Yes, the defense did play well enough to keep us in every game as well as close enough to make them winnable.

NOW something needs to happen with that fricking offense.

Also, someone needs to teach Les to tell time.

It was the ultimate bend but don't break defense. Great improvement from last year and will only get better. I'm relieved with the Chavis hire.

Yup. I dont know if I've ever seen a defense so unimpressive to look at and that gave up so much yardage and yet kept teams out of the end zone so well.
3rd and Chavis needs to be changed to "between the 20's".

I think they were really gassed by the Ark game. They sure spent a lot of time on the field partly because of the inept offense and partly because of the bend but don't break philosophy. The defense deserves a pass for the Ark game.

Don't forget that our linebackers were a very average bunch also. Overall Chavis did a very good job.

Yes, the defense was better than last year. Better than the worst defense LSU has had in at least 11 years, maybe ever. Chavis is good. Not great, but good.

We gave up 450 yards and 24 points (21 if you take away the 3 they got after Peterson's interception). That's not too bad, but hardly great. Alabama ripped through our defense throughout the second half.

It's amazing how much difference seven little percentage points make. That's only one out of about every 14 attempts, or roughly one more third down conversion per game. And look at the difference in results.

I never pined for Chavis when he was at Tennessee and wasn't as thrilled at the hire as some, but he "coached up" his position without question and definitely improved the defense.

Of course improving on last years product was not a big chore, but he improved it significantly nonetheless and should be given that due credit.

IMHO Chavis is solid. Not innovative or spectacular but solid. I see him as a defensive version of Jimbo Fisher in that respect and we could do much worse, as we showed in 2008.

A better D-line and some better TOP from offense will turn it around. They spent to much time on the field and were gassed in a lot of games.
He did well with what was there.

This year's defense was waaaaay beyond my expectations. A+ for Chavis.
