Why isn't our defensive line better? Have we recruited poorly? Evaluated poorly? Coached poorly?

I would also suggest that our bend-but-don't break philosiphy, whether one thinks it sound given the personnel or not, contributed to our defense being gassed.

394 ypg and 24 ppg over the last 4 game (which included an injury riddled LA. Tech) may certainly have something to do with being worn.

Chavis was about what I expected as I expected way better than last year.

Last year was a cluster and a disaster on defense and IMHO should have been way better than last year with a competent D-1 DC like Chavis.

12th ranked D in his first year without the benefit of recruiting the type player that makes his system click......Obviously Chavis SUCKS and he must be fired right after we fire GC.

Amazing. Some people refuse to see the forest for the trees.

Fairly evident it's not Dorsey and Co skill-wise. They get moved off LOS pretty regular, especially late in games. I think next couple years will see big improvement.
Chavis doesn't like to blitz much and you need to have middle pressure from DT position or somebody will get open eventually.

"We gave up 450 yards and 24 points (21 if you take away the 3 they got after Peterson's interception). That's not too bad, but hardly great. Alabama ripped through our defense throughout the second half."

Perhaps because Alabama shut the offense down, would explain their ball movement on the D in the second half

There is no doubt that LSU gives up yards, but not points

The downside to this, is that the defense is on the field an awful lot, getting worn down. It's even worse when the offense goes three and out...a lot.

I don't completely blame Chavis, or his scheme. We have some very average players on defense, particularly on the defensive line. Hopefully next season is better.

dont blame the scheme for the defense staying on the field so long?

3rd and 20 - rush 3 lineman, qb has 7 seconds to throw the ball, finds an open WR = first down

3rd and 11 - first down

3rd and 17 - first down

3rd and longs killed us and it was mainly due to playing prevent D on those occasions.

Having average players on every down keeps you on the field too.

In a 3rd and long situation, you know the opposing team pretty much has to pass, you're not going to bring the house, and have minimal pass coverage. The players have to execute, meaning prevent passes from being caught, in those situations.

Agreed. I hope the D line gets better, then we can judge the 3rd down situation.

we didn't really have any Dlineman that gave us the matchups to bring blitz packages in. The fact that Alem was playing almost every down at DE is a testament to the youth at the position. At the end of the year, teams ran right at him, he would shoot up field and their would be a huge hole right past the guard.

A better dline improves everything IMO. We won't be as talented at linebacker next year, but we won't notice the difference if our dline can improve.

I agree... Without Patrick Peterson, we would have been in trouble this year.

You mean we weren't in trouble, in almost every game except Auburn?

I love the points/game, and the drastic improvement year over year, but...

you could make same argument that some are making about "if the offense was better and controlled the clock/ball the defensive #'s would look better"

For the Offense. If the D got off the field quicker, instead of giving up loads of yards and clock, the offense would have had more opportunities to do something with it.

Our Time of Possession this year was horrible. I'd be interested in how it compares to past yeas.

I was very impressed and it seemed that he was able to improve as the year went on. I would like to see a better scheme for mobile qb's. Obviously the run defense needs to improve greatly. Is that an inherent weakness in Chavis' defense?

Chavis took an average linebacking corps, and made them really good. Not the sign of a crappy coach.
