LSU isn't going to be able to just line up and bully people with the run game.

Maybe not. I’ll concede they were much better in pass pro last year than run blocking.

quote:

They couldn't do it last year, so why do fans think they will be able to do it now, with the same offensive linemen?

This is where your logic fails. Are they really the same offensive lineman as last year? We’ll circle back.

quote:

Jayden Daniels, Nabers and Thomas took the pressure off the offense in the run game.

Just wanted to point out the irony of your OL take as you contradict your reasoning (with no self-awareness) in your very next sentence. Do you think Daniels, Nabers, and Thomas were “the same” players in ‘23 as they were in ‘22? Did they not all get significantly better and make huge jumps from 1 year to the next? Let’s circle back to the line now:

Emery Jones—going into his 3rd season as a starter with another year in the weight room and will be playing at 20 years old, rather than 19. Has started 24 games in his career and has played EVERY OFFENSIVE SNAP in 16 of the 17 SEC games he has started. Was a freshman All-American and a 2nd team All-SEC player as a SO.

Miles Frazier—5th year SR, 4-year starter, 3rd year starter at LSU (was freshman All-American at Florida International before transferring to LSU). Will be playing the ‘24 season at 23-years-old. Started 13 games in ‘22 at LG, RG, and RT before settling in at RG in ‘23 where he started all 13 games. Played 785 snaps, 3rd highest amongst LSU offensive players, including every snap in all 8 SEC games and the FSU and Wisconsin games. A couple of notes on his run-blocking strengths from nfldraftbuzz.com’s scouting report:
quote:

Exceptional size and power, using his 335-pound frame to overwhelm defenders in both pass protection and run blocking

Explosive first step allows him to quickly engage and control opponents, particularly effective in power run schemes***

Powerful run blocker who can drive defenders off the line of scrimmage and create lanes for backs

And their summary:
quote:

Frazier's a mauler in the run game with the size and power to anchor against bull rushes

Best fit is in a power scheme***where he can fire off the ball and drive defenders.

Mid-round prospect with starter potential if he cleans up his pad level and improves hand timing. Power run teams will have him higher on their board.***

I don’t have access to his ‘24 NFL Draft grade from last year, but I doubt very seriously this time last year he would have been considered a
quote:

mid round prospect with with starter potential who could be a solid day one contributor with upside to develop into a reliable multi-year starter.

These 2 dudes have a combined 50 starts at LSU and over 3,000 snaps, most of which have been playing side-by-side. (I’ll do the left side in a separate post).

***Without Jayden at QB where our run game was mostly quick inside zone between the tackles (or even guards) or RPOs, and with the emergence of Caleb Jackson as a true power runner, we are going to a much more power run blocking scheme with more counters, powers, and outside runs with pulling tackles and guards to both compliment Nuss’s game and to take advantage of our huge, athletic, and veteran OL who BK thinks can finally handle both styles. Well still run some inside zone, but adding the power element will open up the offense more and allow for Nuss to take advantage off play action, which should be much more of a staple in this offense than the past 2 years.

I'm still waiting for Russell Shepherd to throw the football. Not once, did Les Miles recruit and develop a good qb that can throw out of HS. RP was the exception, but we know how that turned out. When JJ was asked on ESPN, "What former POTUS shares the same last name as you do" and he answered "George" I knew we were trouble.

GARRETT DELLINGER—will be 22-years-old going into his 4th season as a starter with a career 26 starts (battled injuries his 1st 2 seasons) with in 34 games, 19 being at LG, including all 13 games in ‘23. He, too, played every SEC snap in all 8 games. Has played over 1,500 snaps in LSU career, with 797 of those coming in ‘23.

He doesn’t have a great NFL draft profile currently, but per nfldraftbuzz.com of his strengths in the run game include:

quote:

Shows good quickness and flexibility on reach blocks, and Dellinger has enough range to get out as a puller.

Solid positional run blocker who flashes the nasty demeanor and killer instinct scouts covet.

He's infinitely coachable and athletically gifted with the ideal frame, physique, weight distribution, knee bend and hand strength to be molded into a special blocker.
Quick feet to get inside of defensive tackles to wall off inside and reach linebackers at the second level.

Will Campbell—will be 20-years-old entering his 3rd year as LSU’s starting LT where he has started all 26 games he’s played in, including all 13 last year. Has played every snap in 16 of the 17 SEC games he’s played in (missed final 8 plays against MSU in ‘23) for a combined career 1,687 snaps. He goes into the ‘24 season having not given up a sack in 15 straight games and only 2 in his entire LSU tenure to go along with only 6 penalties. There are too many accolades to mention, but he is a consensus pre-season All-American and the #1 rated LT in the ‘25 draft class, where he is currently a consensus top 10 pick, with some analysts even having him as the # 1 overall player on their boards. Here are some of his strengths as they relate to run blocking again, per nfldraftbuzz.com:
quote:

Excellent size and athleticism for his position, demonstrating fluid movement and agility at 6'6" and 325 pounds.

Remarkable footwork, maintaining position and leverage even when challenged by top defenders.

Strong run blocker, showing improved understanding and execution in creating running lanes and reaching second-level defenders.

Demonstrates good quickness and flexibility on reach blocks, with enough range to get out as a puller.

I’ll do DJ Chester next, but a couple of things that stood out to me reading up on these 4 guys is that that group started in 12 of LSU’s 13 games last year at the same spots they will be in in the upcoming season. Most of them started in all 13, but 1 may have missed a game or 2 of them flipped positions for a game. AND, they all doubled their career LSU snap counts to at least over 1,500. That is almost unheard of. And the best 2 of the bunch played their 1st 2 seasons as teenagers going up against grown men SEC defensive linemen. You don’t think that 3rd year in LSU’s strength and conditioning program is going to tremendously benefit them?

And not only should they—BY FAR—be the most cohesive OL in the country, but I highlighted some of their strengths that should allow them to become much better run-blockers this year, as BK has mentioned multiple times that they will be counted on to make that jump and take on much more responsibilities there due to the tweaks in the “new” offense to compliment a different QB with different skill sets.

I prefer the offense we have but didn’t mind what Les ran when he was here. He just wore the other team down - I think Derek Dooley said it was like bleeding to death watching helplessly as we rolled over them in the 4th quarter.

Obviously, the biggest question mark on the OL is 1st time starter and redshirt freshman

DJ Chester —obviously not much to go on since he only played in 4 games last year with a total of 81 snaps. However, 16 of those came in a very close game and huge road win at Missouri when Charles Turner went down. I think it says a lot about what BK and Brad Davis think about him (mentally, physically, and emotionally/poise) to put him in in that huge spot on the road as a true freshman. And speaking of Charles Turner, though he was clearly good with the mental aspect of the game and consistently snapping the ball, he was always considered the weak link of the OL, mainly due to being undersized. At 6’6” 322, DJ Chester doesn’t have that problem.

Granted, this is from lsusports.net, but they describe him as a”smart player with a great understanding of LSU’s offensive scheme.” He was also very highly touted out of high school as a consensus 4-star OL, with 247 having him as the #5 player in the state of Georgia and #57 overall nationally. Very good athlete who played center, guard, and tackle in high school and was a standout in shot put and discus.

If he can make good snaps consistently and get the calls down (it will help being flanked by the 2 SRs at guard), he should be a big upgrade physically at the position and make the OL even better once the 3 IL play enough together to get their chemistry down. And that’s not even counting 3rd-year starter Mason Taylor at TE who will also be lined up next to Emery Jones for the majority of the snaps for the 3rd year in a row. AND, Kyran Lacy is super physical and one of the best blocking WRs we’ve had in a while. I don’t know anything about CJ Daniel’s blocking ability, but he’s got the size to contribute by blocking in the run game.

To summarize, I actually agree with you that the run blocking last year left a little to be desired, especially in short-yardage/goal line situations. Not that they were bad, but they just didn’t look like one of the best OL in the country when it came to that. But there is nothing to suggest that, even with 4 of the same 5 OL returning, they shouldn’t take a HUGE jump in their run blocking now that there is a much bigger emphasis on it.

I’ve said this previously, but I think this team should be able to run the football with power much better than any in recent history. I think Kaleb Jackson has the chance to make an impact similar to Jeremy Hill’s. And Hill was an animal at LSU.

What do Daniels and Thomas have to do with this year? I said Lacy appears poised to breakout.

There are times no matter how good your passing game is that 3 yards and a cloud of dust is needed. Yes Miles didn't try to have a better passing game and it cost us and he needed to be fired. However Miles smashmouth game did win us 10 to 11 games a year and a natty. I hate when we sometimes get "too cute" offensively when it's 2nd or 3rd and two' RUN THE BALL. We should never get away from a solid smashmouth running game.

No way. 1 loss, maybe.

No big deal losing a Heisman QB, the best WR, another elite WR, and your OC.

The defense was arguably the worst in LSU history, but surely this year’s will resemble the 1985 Bears, right?

Oh yeah, nothing challenging about Alabama, Oklahoma, USC, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Florida, UCLA …. Easy peasy.

Some of our fans are delusional.

You need to watch more film captain.

Positions himself out of a lot of plays, takes poor angles and tackling has been average. He did improve last year some, hoping for significant improvement this year.

But, it will be DL play that determines our year.

that is LSU being unable to run between the tackles to pick up a 3rd and 2.

A lot of teams have this issue now, because they refused to line up under center. Now the ball snaps 5 yards back and has to go forward 7. I wish we will line up in a tight I formation, and hand that ball off to Jackson and let him barrel in for the 2 yards needed. He is going to run some people over this year.

Agree to disagree I guess coach. I've watched plenty. You can certainly find some bad plays...you'll find more good ones guaranteed.

I don't ever want to see the "Les Miles Philosophy" again, but I am looking forward to a physical, down hill run game this year.

There was nothing wrong with Les Miles’ philosophy….it pretty much won us 10 games every year with an occasional national championship. He simply exceeded his ‘shelf life” as our coach and when he went 6-6 he got canned for it. His philosophy wasn't a modern one, but no one can deny that it was effective.

You could go ahead and pencil in the back up running back in the late 3rd quarter coming in with fresh legs putting a dagger to the heart of those tired defensive lines. It almost never failed until late in his career here.

Where do you see all those L’s? Every single game on our schedule looks winnable to me so I’m hoping to fall somewhere in the range of 10-2
