21 Years Ago Today - Carlos Groves (Tennessee) Lucky Day vs. Shaq

March 13, 1992 - Shaq gets pulled from behind while going in for a dunk vs. Tennessee in SEC basketball tournament. Carlos Groves is still alive today, only because Shaq missed with the elbow that he threw. It was the point where Shaq finally reached his limit on opponents' intentional fouls - to put him on the free throw line.
Dale Brown rushed the court to come to Shaq's aid and was criticized for being overly physical with some Tennessee players. To this day, Dale Brown can never be questioned for his support and defense of his players.
I can't find a video of the Shaq - Groves altercation, so this will have to do.
Shaq Highlight Video
(One of those sports fights I'll never forget, as I was in Woman's Hospital for the birth of my youngest son. You could hear the hollering of all the "new dad's" throughout the hospital.)

I was there in person. One of the most hostile enviornments I've ever witnessed. It galled me that Tennessee came out of that as some "victim". Tennessee had two of the biggest POS in SEC history in Carlus Groves and Steve Rivers.O'Neal was schooling Groves all night like the punk he was. Up 73-51 O'Neal wheeled for a dunk and Groves just ran behind him and tried to tackle him.No not just keeping him from scoring, full body hold.
Remember Groves knocked Vernell Singleton down on a breakway the year before in Baton Rouge. The Birmingham Civic Center was going absolutely nuts.I had visions of the 1972 Ohio State-Minnesota game when fans stormed the court in Minneapolis and attacked Ohio State players. I was in the lower section behind LSU's bench and ran down behind "just in case". (in fact, if you knew who the heck I was you could see me in the background in some of the ESPN and CNN highlights.
But whereas Dale's frustration boiled over and him running out to the court, Tennessee was all about fighting. Yet somehow the crowd backed Tennessee. Never understood that.
Growing up for Vandy I always hated Tennessee and that night my sheer 'real' hatred for those worthless bastards was entrenched forever.

I remember that day fairly well. I remember in the post game press conferences Dale Brown was all but saying, "This is why Shaq doesn't need to come back to college for another year."
Of course, Shaq was going to leave regardless.

Well the league had never seen a hack a Shaq type philosophy. Neither had the refs. It was one of the main reasons Daddy Dale pushed him on the Pro's. He was very vocal about this issue.

I"ve never understood that about basketball, in the closing minutes/seconds of a close game, the losing team intentionally fouls the team with the ball. Why is that not called an intentional foul? Give the team the free throw(s) AND the ball.
I just can't get into a game where breaking the rules (fouling) is such a big part of the game.

I mean the rule says that in order for it to be intentional there has to be no legitimate play on the ball (at least that is/was one of the stipulations). Most of the time they just swat at the ball. Intent calls have no business in any sport (I'm looking at you CFB with your ejections for the intent of targeting).

Completely agree. Everyone hates the end of basketball games for this reason.
But the draw back is so many games would end at 35 seconds left because a team could just hold the ball and run out the clock. Doesn't seem to hurt football though.

I was in the Tiger Band at that time and was there. They were calling Dale, "Woody!" "Woody!" (Woody Hayes) We were booed everywhere and during the next game against Kentucky some of their fans (including kids) were throwing crap at us.

Tennessee doing "thug" things to Rohan Davey's knee says hi.
Boom on the Vol nation...yeah i said Vol nation, because the state of Tennessee has zero talent so they have to go nationwide to get thugs.

Lsu got screwed by the refs twice at the end of that season. The refs were letting shaq get beat up and other teams knew it. The two biggest examples are the horrible call at the end of the arkansas game that costs us the regular season sec championship, then the bs in the tennessee game that led to the fight that got shaq suspended for the sec tournament championship game. Those two things messed up our ncaa seeding enough that we had to play indiana.

The ending of that Arkansas game was the worst.
