Despite withholding his bodily force, a blatantly visible attempt to restrain a significant hit on the quarterback, White was immediately expelled from the current game and ultimately suspended for the first half of the Alabama game on November 3rd.
This targeting call was simply the wrong call to make. White led with his hands, not his head. He slowed his momentum and did not forcefully hit Nick Fitzgerald. He did not launch himself into the quarterback, instead he visibly attempted to play by the rules.
As an LSU fan, you may choose to ignore my opinion regarding this targeting call and penalty. But please, consider the thoughts of the national pundits:
“Just a horrible call. They even get to watch replay and still rule against him. I just don’t get it. The kid led with his hands, seriously. It’s so aggravating.” – ESPN’s Mike Golic
“That’s the worst targeting call that I’ve ever seen.” --- CBS Sport’s Barrett Sallee
“The Devin White circumstances at the very least demand a restructuring of the targeting rule” --- Fox Sports’ Tim Brando
Members of the SEC, I beg of you… please do the right thing and overturn the suspension on Devin White. Do not let this be the topic of conversation regarding the biggest game in the SEC. Please, do not add another storyline to the conspiracy theory that the Southeastern Conference caters to the wants and needs of the University of Alabama. Do not let this become another black cloud hanging over the decision to review all calls in question from a headquarters located in Birmingham, Alabama.
You have a choice. You can easily resolve this matter. And we can prepare for the biggest football game of the year and allow all other matters to be settled on the field in a fair and fitting way.
Or, you can ignore this situation, laugh at the LSU fans, players, coaches, administration and political figures and hope that this storyline goes away.
I do not see lasting consequences for your conference by overturning this call. I can’t say the same for option number two.
