I believe Monster may hit .350 to .400 this year.

I'm thinkng the same. I believe his batting average will lead the team. He wasn;t skinny as a freshman but he has put on more weight. l'm curious if his power numbers will increase.

Can't wait to see how they plan to use Casan Evans and how Guidry and William Schmidt are built up leading into the season opener. Ware is an absolute stud, likely our closer.

3b defensively scares me

Very weird thing to be concerned about with this team. Dickinson or Braswell (or Milam) seem like a clear step up from Tanks or Berry defensively. Tanks did have a good year last year for himself though.

Catcher has to be the biggest question mark by far defensively for us going into the season. I dont know that we'll ever be an elite defensive team under Jay, he will always prefer some offense over defense. But the infield seems pretty dang solid overall going into the season defensively, I dont see any clear defensive liability type players like we've had in the past at certain spots. Catcher though, it's certainly going to be interesting how that unfolds. With Stanfield and Curiel (if he continues hi hot streak in spring) potentially grabbing starting OF spots, thats like 2 CF's patrolling the OF for you.

As a former high school catcher I’m just glad I won’t have to watch Neal not block a single ball this year and then look in disbelief when it rolls to the backstop! Worst sec catcher I have ever seen.

Neal was extremely rough behind the plate, although I have no idea how much his health affected that. Both years here he was never fully healthy and Jay tipped his hand at that entering last season saying he didnt expect Neal to be a primary catcher due to his health.

Wild...how much more running you see us doing? I think this team will be our best combo of speed and power we've seen Johnson have since he's be here.

Not trying to answer for Wild but I think Jay had many more steal attempts in fall than I remember in privious scrimmages. I think this was to test the new catchers more than as an indication of what to expect during the season. We do have some good base runners on ths year's team but I am sceptical of Jay changing his approach to aggressive base running. I hope that I am wrong about that. Spring scrimmages should start later this month.

Dickinson hasn't seemed to have earned it over Braswell and Dickinson was even playing 2nd a fair amount. That doesn't give me faith in his arm. Braswell's accuracy from 3rd really scares me. Great arm but it has some run on it. He lead the team in errors last year and had a fair amount of throwing errors from ss. Hope its a non issue but I have some concerns there.

I agree with Scuba. It's a gorilla ball team not a small ball team. You don't want to risk running a player out and the next guy up hits a HR. I don't see anything changing there.

Is this not true for most SS’s on every team?

I'm so looking forward to our Tigers' season. This whole board knows baseball a hell of alot more than me.One thing I'm certain of however is: Jay Johnson is the best college coach ,coaching t he game today!Judge for yourself...look what he has accomplished already !

SS often lead teams in errors, it's by far the hardest position to play. Thats not indicative of anything really.

He fielded .940 from SS which is adequate and nothing to be alarmed about. 3B is an easier position, you think he cant do as good as Tommy White there? Seriously? I mean Tanks was the 2 extremes at 3B between 2023 (the worst I've ever seen at LSU IIRC) and 2024 (arguably best in conference). 3B defense is not something I'd be worried about at all. Even if it took a slight dip from Tanks last season it's not like it would be that noticeable. 3B just has way less chances than SS does. The difference in Tanks fielding .940 vs. .971 would be a whopping 3 errors over the course of the whole season last year.

Braswell had 1 error in his last 18 games last season, 2 in the last 26 games. He improved a ton as the year went on.

Baseball season!!! (Sorta)

Will this be the year Frey finally lives up to the potential that Jay obviously sees in him? Not sure where he would fit in but that's one I'm looking out for. Josh Pearson probably has among the lower ceilings of the outfield guys but he's got experience and has already shown he can deliver in the clutch so you know he's gonna get his reps. Will be fun to see him playing with his brother.

I'm personally not too worried about SS. Braswell played there last year and while he wasn't stellar, he was fine. Somewhere between more reps and experience or a better player replacing him and I would hope that we'll be better there.

Pitching seems to be loaded in potential but lacking in proven production. Anderson had a bit of up and down as a freshman but the potential is there so hopefully he really steps up. All the reports I hear is that Guidry is better than ever so we'll see how that goes and where he fits in. Most of the other guys are either transfers or coming off injury so I have no idea how they'll stack up. Potential looks to be there for a dominant staff, but I think that's been the case coming in for the last 3 seasons and it hasn't necessarily worked that way in practice. I feel pretty confident we're gonna score runs this year. If we have a dominant staff to hold down opponents then I think we may need to start the bitching about how the weather in the br super/regional pushed our games back to put us in the later starting Omaha bracket.

Stansfield didn’t come here to sit the bench. He’s gonna get plenty of chances to start and will be out there unless he has a Bingham type season

Intrigued by this Gavin Guidry experiment we might see this spring. His stuff is never very effective after about 2 innings now there is chatter as to he might start. I am in no way saying he hasn’t developed but with his mix of pitches in the sec I’m interested to see it. Eric walker comes to mind as the only one recently with Guidrys type of stuff not meant to downplay guidrys breaker at all it’s nasty. He might throw it 4 pitches in a row though and then they have seen it and tee off if it’s in the zone. He is a competitor and I rather enjoy watching him pitch I’m just very curious to see what guidrys part will be this year. Tired of football chatter it’s baseball season now!

It's fair question. Can Guidry extend past 2 or 3 innings?

I don't know the answer to that. I can tell you that the staff debated grooming Guidry to be a starting pitching since his freshman year. Ultimately, they decided to use him as a closer.

This year he has been focused in as a pitcher only and really dedicated himself this past summer to that endeavor. Adding weight and spent some time with a program out of state to help pitchers.

This fall he was hard to hit for 2 or 3 innings. We also need to realize this is his money year.

Is it fair to say that Mayers will get the longest leash? If he emerges as trusted…look out. LSU in some years, has had an unexpected pitcher elevate his game in late May and June. Maybe Mayers isn’t the out-of-the-gate star, but a dagger twisted into opponents once in Omaha?

We have enough guys that can extend innings wise that we can afford to let Mayers start games and withstand an early exit.

I've said before that I think he should be the mid week starter and be given a pitch count target. Normal build up early in the season but once fully there, get him to 85 or 90 pitches each game. Whether he makes it through 3 or through 6 is up to him. Hopefully over time he's getting closer to 5 innings per and pushing for a weekend spot. He needs the mound time to work through his control issues. But the stuff is there.

And if he does have a blow up and you have to pull him at 3.1 innings, we still have a ton of guys that will be looking for innings and could use some multi-inning appearances.
