Anybody remember the 1997 Independence Bowl against Notre Dame? I have fond memories of watching it on ESPN and listening to it on AM 870. Was a good night.

Vengeance for losing to ND in the regular season. Rondell Mealey ran wild on the Irish.

I was there. It was cold and sleeting but a lot of fun. Mealy had a great game. The magic was back.

The fan base was also crazy for Lou Tepper’s new defense after that game. I had forgotten that he joined the staff just 2 weeks before the game when Carl Reece bolted to Texas.

“ Former Illinois coach Lou Tepper, who joined the Tigers two weeks ago as their defensive coordinator after Carl Reese left to become part of Mack Brown's staff at Texas, worked a little of the magic LSU coach Gerry DiNardo hoped he would. Though the Tigers didn't look much different — all that talk of using three linebackers turned out to be just that, talk — LSU looked quicker and had the Irish offense completely confused in the second half.”

I remember that because my mom would always make a big dinner on Sunday. My dad and i were deer hunting and hauled arse to get home in time for kickoff and there was a huge plate of pot roast waiting for me. Ahh to be 12 again.

I was there in the cold and rain rocking my LSU starter jacket. Some guy behind me dropped his pizza on my back and ruined it. I actually saw someone wearing the exact jacket at the game Saturday night and it brought back the memory.

Day after my sister’s wedding. We had a bunch of great food left over for the game.

Got invited the morning of the game by a buddy of mine from Shreveport. He had a couple of people back out and offered me the two seats. My truck was in the shop, so my younger brother and I jumped in his beater car (everyone in my family drove beaters back in the day ) and made the drive to Shreveport.

We didn’t bring warm enough clothes because we where both stupid college students and to this day, that game was the coldest I’ve ever been at a sporting event. The wind was swirling around that stadium and chilling everyone to the bone. We bought a couple of cheap plastic rain ponchos from a guy right outside the stadium and that at least cut the wind a tiny bit.

The game itself was a lot of fun. Obviously Mealey was an animal and it’s always nice to beat Notre Dame - but I’d be lying if I said I remembered much about the actual game itself. My memories are mostly of cold. Bitter cold - and an unexpected, poorly planned trip with my brother.

We grabbed a quick bite after the game and made the drive straight back to BR.

It was the last trip my brother and I made together before he moved out west. It’s a fond memory.
