Just found this game on YouTube. LSU losing a close game on the road to defending champion UNC. I was working at Goudchaux's that day but heard a report at halftime that LSU was leading 21-9. There was no way that LSU was going to contain a UNC team with MJ, Sam Perkins, and Brad Daugherty for an entire game. LSU actually led by 1 with under 1 minute to play but a few too many turnovers and missed free throws doomed them. This is the first time I've seen this game from over 40 years ago.

It is really cool seeing veterans Howard Carter and Leonard Mitchell play with FR Jerry Reynolds and Don Redden. Derrick Taylor was academically ineligible so they only had Johnny Jones as PG. John Tudor actually played PG when Jones got in foul trouble so this team was lacking ball handlers (the J Reynolds PG experiment was still a year or two away). Steffond Johnson played a solid game against future NBA starters. Even 6'11" Rick Stanfel got quality minutes and a basket.

I forget why this team didn't make the tournament. They went to the NIT but got eliminated in the first round.

LSU was a really good team in 1982-83, 19-11 regular season and 2nd place in the SEC only behind Kentucky. And the Tigers had some impressive games that year, with two wins vs Final Four participant Georgia and an upset of Kentucky in the PMAC, in addition to the close loss at UNC. They should have gone tourney, but back then only 48 teams, not 64, got in.

LSU had a solid lineup that year; the following year it was pretty much the same Tiger team, and they made the tourney, but exited early in Salt Lake City vs Dayton. There were actually grumbles about Brown's coaching after what was considered a disappointing season in 1983-84.

Named a court after that coach

And lost in the first round again in a blowout against David Robinson and Navy. Ended up with a 10-game postseason losing streak that spanned 5 years. Ended with a first-round SEC tournament win in '86 and that team went to the Final Four as an 11 seed.

Who couldn't do in 25 years what it took Kim Mulkey two years to do. Court should be named after her and her alone.

I remember that game. I was a student back then.

Speaking of Brad Dougherty , I once went snorkeling with him and his family in Stingray City off Grand Cayman. Nice guy with a nice family.

That team lost a ton of close SEC games they shouldve won. Got it together late and played great down the stretch but needed at least one win in the SEC tourney to reach NCAA's but lost in first round. I went to the first round NIT game against UNO in the PMAC. They used red white and blue balls that year in the NIT. Lost in OT to finish a very disappointing season.

John Tudor broke Kenny Smith's arm fouling him on a layup. If it happened today it would be all over twitter for weeks.

Yes, you are reminding me they were on a bad first-round losing streak in post-season play for about 4 years. From 1982-85 they lost in the first round - twice in the NIT and twice in the NCAA. I'd forgotten they had similar results in the SEC tournament.

Steffond was one of the most underrated players in LSU history.

Redden and Reynolds were legit all stars. On paper, the team should have been able to compete w tar heels and did

It was Smith's wrist, but it probably cost UNC the National Championship.
Interesting game with LSU running the Four Corners to gain that 21-9 lead, usually a UNC tactic. Ice Reynolds was terrific on defense.

I remember Steffond being hot and cold and being the guy folks said Brown recruited instead of Karl Malone. In hindsight it is easy to say that was a mistake (if that's what really happened), but I try to give Brown the benefit of the doubt.

I love Redden and Reynolds. Reynolds had a decent NBA career and who knows what Redden would have done but for his untimely death. However, that Tarheel team had Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, and host of solid college players with size and talent. I think they were down their starting PG in that game but, even so, I look at the teams and, on paper, UNC could have killed LSU. It makes me wonder about Dean Smith's coaching at the time.

The wrist breaking incident was the '83-'84 game, also at UNC. That was a fun game as both MJ and Reynolds went off, scoring about 28 points a piece. I remember John Williams saying he decided to come to LSU after watching that game. He believed he would be the missing piece for a championship. Think about what the 85-86 team could have been had Reynolds not gone pro early, Nikita Wilson had not been declared ineligible and Tito Horford hadn't flaked out and left before the season started. The team made the Final Four without those 3 guys.

For all the trashing of Dale Brown on this board, his true fatal flaw was not adapting to the 3 pt shot. He always built teams that could compete with anyone (UNC and Kentucky included), in a shot-for-shot basis. But that was assuming every shot count as 2. For him, a jumper was merely a means of opening the post area more, not a strategic weapon.

The team with CJ, Shaq and Stanley would have won it all, if not for the 3. LSU outshot Georgia Tech.

No coincidence LSU slid back to the pack in that era, because the game changed. He didn't or couldn't adjust. It sucked, because we were at the point of becoming a perennial contender and would have won a few titles, until that happened.
