My Freshman year too. It was an epic experience. I couldn't hear the entire game except at 1/2 time. I was so sure we had it on that 4th down play...

I was at that game too. That must have been a crazy feeling to be under the stands when the stadium shook!

A great atmosphere, didn't see many fans leave at halftime.

I was 16 and had been to many a game in TS but that night was a whole different experience. I remember shaking my head at my brother and saying this is nuts. Had this been a victory it would be pointed at as the Gold Standard of LSU games.

Here is an article from And the Valley Shook. Gives a lot of detail to those who weren't there.

Greatest Game

quote:

Ronnie Lott called the scene one of the greatest of his career, “Every one of us left that night saying ‘that was a game, ‘ but I still think about it that way. I haven’t been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I’ve ever played in, I’ve never been in anything like that, and I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment.”

Frick it. I'm watching it tonight. USC at LSU 1979 SEP 29 (SAT) 7:30 PM

Damn. I just watched it again for the first time since attending that game as a freshman in ‘79. Seeing USC score with only 30 seconds left brought back how heartbreaking that game was. LSU fought their heart’s out that night. We deserved to win.

I was going to say the same thing. Our defense came up big to
to keep the Tide out of the end zone, but they dominated the game
and could have won by 3 touchdowns

I was in the student section, 2nd year at The Ole War Skule.

LSU waged war that night but came up just short.

Hype on campus that week was over the top buzzing, crowd of 80K was electric. Only TS game I ever stood the entire game.

Could not talk for a week from yelling, can’t hear sh*t to this day.

Great experience.

Same here (actually my first BIG game-I was at LSU/Rice the week before)--there seem to be a few of us here tonight!

I had a class with Benjy Thibodeaux--he got a round of applause when he walked in that next week.

Anthony Munoz, all-time OL great was on that USC team. I remember when Tennessee came to Tiger Stadium in Saban's first year (2001). He warned his son that it was the loudest stadium he'd ever played in-college or pro. LSU won that game in OT 38-31.

I’m 30 so basically a 2000+ fan. Anytime I go to an away game and drink with older fans I ask them about this game. Sounds so incredible. Love talking to you older fans about classic games

Can’t wait to be in yalls shoes and tell the youngsters about how I was there when we turned the tide with burrow in 2019

Strange first interview by 1979 USC guard Brad Budde upon being selected in the first round by the Chiefs. Upon being asked about his college career, he said he was glad he didn't have to play in Death Valley again. True story. After reading these posts, I now understand why he brought that up.

I have attended pretty much every single big LSU home game since then and have never again seen Tiger Stadium like it was that night.

Same here. Only game I've heard was comparable was 1971 Notre Dame as far as sustained noise. I was too young for that one.

Still the greatest home game I've ever been to. 17 years old and full of vigor. I sat over the visiting team tunnel and when they came out I yelled at Charles White " You suck" and he flipped me the bird. That crowd was as loud as any home crowd ever. I had tears in my eyes at the end of the game I was so angry at the face mask call. USC fans were used to that laid back west coast game atmosphere so I would take their horror stories with a grain of salt. Just a typical game in death valley against a ranked opponent. But that game was one of the games that put the fear in teams coming to LSU to play. At the time was considered the greatest O Line in college football history. Still may be.

I remember Condon calling McDonald and asking him about his recollections about Tiger Stadium. He called him more than once. Maybe he still does, I don't know.

In one of the conversations, McDonald made the comment that he couldn't believe people in BR were still talking about that game. The implication was that it all was a bit silly.

I was there in the student section...it was a magical night even though we lost....the loss still stings....I went to the rematch in Los Angeles a few years later and revenge was sweet but not quite the same.

Yep...so when's the rubber match? The Tigers and Trojans have only played the two times. I saw on ESPN that USC signed a home and home with Ole Miss---WIMPS!

Was there, like 10yrs old, hate to say it now but I liked Charles White because back then that was all you heard about , big schools on sports, can’t stand USC now. But White made a run slid into to the fence in the corner and I slapped him on the helmet WILL never forget that.
