1979-80 Basketball season “Tigers to the Top”

For those of you too young (or not born then), watching the game yesterday and hearing Sims (Unrelated to Willie from ‘79-80) name reminded me of the greatest LSU team I’ve ever seen play. Defensively this team was ferocious and on the glass unreal. When Rudy ripped his hand open in New Orleans Elite Eight game, I knew we would struggle some inside, but I still thought we would win it all.
What a great year though...
Here is an excellent read... Enjoy!

If you are referring to the Final Four team it was 80-81. But 79-80 team was pretty darn good to with Scales made it to Elite 8 before losing to Louisville and won what to this day is LSU's only SEC basketball tournament title over Bowie/Macy and Kentucky.

This era of LSU basketball is what made LSU basketball for me. Frankly I didn't know they had a team until 78ish. I was 10. It was always football football football before Dale made basketball matter.
I'll never forget it. The Gumps were furious for years. The gall of Dale Brown to hang a banner before the game was even over

with 38 seconds to play and the Tigers ahead 84-66, a huge banner was unfurled from a catwalk high above the floor. It read: SEC BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS 1979, and it seemed a signal for the release of every ounce of frustration in Baton Rouge. As the joint went wild, enraged 'Bama Coach C. M. Newton protested the disruption to the refs

Yep, '79, '80, and '81 teams all faced the eventual tournament champions for those seasons. PMAC student section was rockin' with some of the old "Who Dats"! Great memories...

I think there was something about Sims being Jewish or something because he was from NYC?? Anyway, back in the day that was kinda unique for fans since recruiting out of state talent really took off then.

I was a student at LSU at the time. That was a fun ride.

And I was there for the banner. In fact, I was the first student in!!!

It was a different media era and you wouldn't get real stories like you do now. I would read everything I could get my hands on about the team. I seem to remember it was Curry Kirkpatrick in Sports Illustrated who wrote:
"Who could get a Black New York Jew to play basketball in Baton Rouge LA? Only Dale Brown."
or something along those lines

Teams from that era were so much fun to watch.

Beating KY 3 in a row was huge.

Scales was ridiculous.
All the kiddies on here have no idea how big LSU basketball used to be and can't perceive of how exciting the games were. (Equal to anything in Tiger Stadium, except for USC 79)

I was lucky enough to be in school at LSU from 1978-1983. Yes basketball was king. Those three years we lost to the eventual champion in the NCAAs were awesome. I thought it was always going to be like that.
