Also, a few questions about Atcheson:

-was he coerced in any way to do this or was this all his doing?
-did he need approval from the University?
-what was the perception of the sudden jump in NC's at the time? how did the university and fanbase feel about it? how did the rest of the SEC feel about it? and how was it perceived nationally?

May be one of the greatest teams ever...Doc Fenton- Legend! Crazy that they don't count this team, but then Joe Jackson is not in the baseball HOF, so stranger things do happen...

I would agree LSU shoulda won that one. Sorry I can't feel for Chicago fans since the Cubs DID win the World Series that year.

They should, they used to have it in the programs and media guides, but they never put a flag up.

Because we're not bama fans that feel the need to live through meaningless championships won before most of our grandparents were born

I don't have any problem acknowledging that Alabama has a stronger and older winning tradition than LSU. I also don't really have a problem with Alabama claiming most of the National Titles that they do. However, I have a problem with three of them:

1941: Not SEC Champion, #20 in AP, not national champ in any serious contemporary ranking.

1973: Played Notre Dame and lost in Sugar Bowl matchup of #1 vs #2. Since UPI posted national champions before the bowl, they can claim a wire service did rank them there, but it's pretty embarrassing. They would never let us get away with claiming 2011 under the same circumstances.

1978: Played Southern Cal in the regular season and lost pretty handily. Now it is true that Southern Cal lost later in the season, but in every rational tiebreaker, head-to-head is the first tiebreaker.

If a contemporary service put LSU as #1 in 1908, then we would have an argument, under the same circumstances that Bama claims 1925. Such a ranking simply doesn't exist.

I am just hoping they don't get to claim 16 after this season.

Because that season occurred six years before the outbreak of WWI and really, no official claims of NCs in that era mean shite.

LSU's 1908 NC claim is every bit as valid as some of BAMA's claimed championships. They are actually playing for number 9 not number 15. Former BAMA sports information direction Wayne Atcheson is who started claiming these other national championships in the eighties. He added 5 titles that pre-dated Bear Bryant to the media guide in the 1980's.

Got 12? How BAMA upped its claim to 12 national titles

I actually had the chance to ask Joe Alleva about this yesterday. He doesn't know either.

Posted by Godfather1 Bama claims that 1941 title, which is just absolutely ludicrous. They were something like 6-4-1 that year. ETA: I stand corrected. They were 9-2. But not SEC champs, and only #20 in the final AP poll.

Winning the SEC is not something Bama worries about

There are plenty of other national championships claimed by BAMA that are equally as ridiculous as their claimed 1941 title. Bama's titles in 1925, 1926, 1930, and 1934 all are based on polls and awarded titles that were bestowed retroactively by a poll started in the future years after the year they supposedly won the title in question.

Wayne is now the librarian and curator for the Billy Graham Library and Museum, at Asheville, North Carolina. You are not going to find a more mild-mannered, well-meaning person in the country, in my opinion. He grew up near Clanton, Alabama as the son of a humble Baptist preacher. He was the sponsor-director of the University of Alabama chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for several years, even after he had left the SID position.
