There is absolutely ZERO reason not to claim this title. In fact it is disrespectful to those young men on the 1908 squad not to honor their accomplishments.

the ncf natty is the defacto recognition of national championships prior to 1939, first year of the ap. coaches poll started in 1948
1936 was the first year of the AP poll. The rest of your post is correct. We should claim 1908.

Except for the most important reason - LSU was not awarded the title by anyone.

LSU wasn't a major program at the time, and didn't really play anyone. Claiming the 1908 title would be like UCF claiming the 2017 title.

Here's the schedule:

10/3 vs. New Orleans Gym Club (non-IA) W 41 0
10/11 vs. Jackson Br.-New Orleans (non-IA) W 81 5

10/17 vs. Texas A&M (3-5) W 26 0 @ New Orleans, LA
10/26 vs. Rhodes (non-IA) W 55 0
10/31 @ Auburn (6-1) W 10 2
11/7 vs. Mississippi State (3-4) W 50 0
11/10 vs. Baylor (3-5) W 89 0
11/16 vs. Haskell (3-5-1) W 33 0 @ New Orleans, LA
11/23 @ Louisiana Tech (non-IA) W 22 0
11/26 vs. Arkansas (5-4) W 36 4 @ Little Rock, AR

LSU played 6 teams that counted, only two of which finished with winning records. It was a regional 'championship' at best.

Not true. The NCAA does not recognize UCF self claimed NC.

So all the fans that have been criticizing Alabama for there 5 NC's that they claim in the pre AP Poll era are now saying lets do what Bama does?
no one gives bama crap for claiming old championships, its the ones where they didn't finish in the top 10 where people have a problem

Irrelevant. LSU didn't play anyone in 1908, therefore they shouldn't get 'awarded' a title. UCF didn't play anyone in 2017, therefore they shouldn't get 'awarded' a title.

The National Championship Foundation (NCF) has retroactively selected both Penn and LSU for 1908. That it was retroactive makes it bullshite. That the same organization picked two teams to be champions makes it absurd.

An interesting read on the 1908 season.

Penn claims the 1908 national championship, does that mean we can't as well? Back then several teams claimed them.

Honestly I do not care either way. It would be cool to say we have 5 but I will not lose sleep over it either.

The best way to get the ball rolling is for LSU beat writers to make a story promoting this (again) and for us to constantly keep a thread like this going. Needs to be daily

People seem to look at championships differently. Some people think a school should claim any undefeated year as a championship year. Other people, such as myself, and the Alabama AD, think schools should only recognize titles awarded to them contemporaneously by reputable organizations.

That is, if someone gives you a trophy as champions for the previous season, you can choose to acknowledge it by displaying the trophy.

If you have no trophy to display for that season's championship, you look like an idiot by claiming it.

Bama did this and it’s backfired quite a bit.

I’d rather just stick with four and just keep bagging on the tide for retroclaiming titles.

Seems like us older guys are getting outvoted. These Millennial's grew up with everyone getting a trophy.

Get over yourself, It’s not about you! It’s about recognizing the accomplishments of a great Tiger team that fricked over because of a jealous little sister!

Bama claims the 1941 Natty (using the "Houlgate" rating system). They went 9-2, finished THIRD in the SEC, and TWENTIETH in the AP Poll. There's even a freakin' plaque in the ground outside of the stadium.

This is absolutely hilarious

this is really a sad thread. We’re just chasing titles because Bama does it.

1908? Really?
