The NCAA does not officially recognize a champion in Division I FBS.

“Division I FBS football is the only National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sport for which the NCAA does not sanction a yearly championship event.”

Personally I think there should be a cutoff on how far back National championships are counted, maybe 1935 with the 1st Heisman being awarded? (can be considered "modern era"?)

Yes, technically no FBS team is awarded a National Championship by the NCAA....2019 included. That's why we all call it the Mythical National Championship.

....However, the NCAA has 1908 listed on its website as LSU being selected by the preeminent organization for that time period (NCF)

1908 team one of the most dominant in history! A disgrace that we don't recognize and honor that team as a National Champion!

You do know one of those 4 is a co national championship right?

Nah. LSU got the trophy. NCAA recognizes LSU as champion that year.

2004 Auburn has a much stronger case than 2003 USC.

A bunch of butthurt left coast writers don’t get to decide when there’s a formal system in place. Their input was part of the formula used to determine the top 2 teams, and their team still didn’t make it.

USC claiming 2003 (or anyone claiming it on their behalf) is just being ridiculous.

And guess what else? When USC won the 2004 BCS Title the next year, WHY WAS THERE NO MENTION OF THEIR PHUCKING 2004 AP TITLE ????????? They sure were quick to claim the 2003 AP title as a "co-championship." Phuck USC....

Maybe we should do like bama and claim all of our NC seasons by all the various polls, indeces, computer rankings, associations, publications, etc. (Billingsley, Dunkel Index, etc.)

1908, 1935, 1936, 1958, 1961, 1962, 2003, 2007, 2011, 2019

Alabama isn’t the only school that does this. Michigan claims 9 titles before the polls. Princeton and Yale claim 28 & 27 titles respectively. Having said that 1908 is the only one I think LSU should claim. We were undefeated and NCF lists us as a NC.

Didn’t see it on the thread yet: In 1908 LSU outscored opponents 442-11. Penn was 11-0-1 and outscored opponents 215-28.

Because no one awarded LSU the championship that year.

You kind of need a trophy before you can 'claim' a championship.

I was waiting for someone to post this. The NCAA does not control nor has it ever controlled D1 CFB NC's.

Bama did this and it’s backfired quite a bit.

I’d rather just stick with four and just keep bagging on the tide for retroclaiming titles.

Bama did this

Not really, they have contemporaneous awards for each claim. 1941 is the least reputable awarding entity, though.

bama only claims 4 nattys prior to 1939. it's claiming 1942 that gets em in trouble.

they were undefeated rose bowl champs that the ncf gave nattys to prior to 1939 for the other 4.

I forgot the 42 NC they claim. Ok, who gave NC's prior to the AP that was a uniform national body. A newspaper in Atlanta decided to say here is our NC and Bama gets it. One in Chicago says Notre Dame gets it. One in LA says USC gets it.

Alabama won the Rose Bowl several times in the 20's, I am well aware. But any NC prior to the AP has always been a little sketchy to me.
