Spot on post. To add, my biggest thing moving forward is this coaching staff. The gymnastics is there, but I question and have been questioning Jay Clark since he took over. Why is Kiya in the all around first meet with so much depth? It baffles me to even consider her doing the leg events first meet out. There are too many other ladies who could step in. Again coaching. Bars definitely an upgrade with Konnor and Savannah. Lord, beam is so important in a gymnastics meet. If Konnor has all this talent in the world, why couldn’t she do something easier after a fall ? I know there are backups for a gymnast with her talent. There are many girls fighting for spots and don’t know how practices go. Sierra has built in deductions on her leaps and basically only has stuck that dismount once last year. I’m sorry but that’s not gonna cut it. A clear distinction from OU is those ladies are prepared every year . LSU hopped around a lot and if you really look at some of the faces as the ladies were performing they seemed so nervous and rushed. KJ seemed rushed on that first pass, Aleah breathing heavy on her floor. LSU has the talent but OU has the winning mindset and attention to details. That’s what wins championships. This staff has to get these ladies to settle down, find consistency and have fun. The girls can have trust in each other get along well and all that good stuff but this is sport. The gymnastics is there, the mental toughness and coaching has to step up in order for LSU to ever win a national title.

I think these are excellent points. Honestly, I kind of have hope after Jay’s press conference - it was clear he was disappointed and said they have to change some things. He also mentioned he could tell they got tight and were somewhat overwhelmed by the atmosphere. So I am willing to give them that. However OU had a great night and we will be facing them (on podium, I believe) next week in a big time meet (along with ucla and Utah). We should be toe to toe with them, but it will take a big step up in execution.

I certainly think the my can do it, the question is will they.

Question: if they win a natty, do the student sports med staff get a ring? I've got a sister (no pics) who is some kind of kinesiology or sports med major (she's changed it up somewhere along the way) and goes with the team to stretch them, etc. The sideline help with water bottles, towels, etc.

Anybody have any news on those that didn't compete?

Alyona, Elena, Chase?

I would guess Elena didn’t make any lineups.

Alyona is out for the season with Achilles per those someone who have interviewed her on a podcast. Elena has back issues. Chase hopefully just sick? Did anyone see her at the meet?

As I post I would like to say as a fan of not only gymnastics but LSU, many in these boards dislike post that are critical of the staff and somewhat the gymnast. This goes for the football team that LSU had this year . Fans criticize and critique all sports. I directly compare all teams to OU because they are now. How does this staff have these ladies winning titles year after year? What are they doing that LSU and other top teams aren’t doing year after year ? On a lot of Facebook boards and Reddit a lot of lsu gym fans are delusional on certain aspects of the team and the program. No one is perfect but year after year I question the head coach. Year after year LSU is always the topic of winning a national championship that doesn’t come to fruition. It comes a point in time to be honest about things even if it’s your team or your favorite gymnast.

I hope Chase is ok, whatever the reason was for her absence. She’s such a vital part of this team!

I completely agree! We are certainly allowed to be critical of the coaches and the gymnasts (on their gymnastics). I do agree that some of the posters on this board seem to want to coddle the coaches/players (either because of personal relationships or otherwise). However, this is a high-level sport with high-level expectations, the same as the rest of LSU athletics. So your critiques are refreshing. Sofly!

I guess the big positive from last night (aside from winning!) is how the girls didn’t fold the tent and quit. They dug deep and came back with a fantastic floor rotation! I hope going forward we don’t put ourselves in the position where we have to come back though. Beam needs work in all aspects, and I hope we can stick more landings on vault and bars. We have so much talent!

Football and baseball fan here but have a 8 year old daughter that wants to come to a meet. We have decided the Auburn meet and are starting to look for tickets. Anything special that I need to know? Best/worst places to sit? Pre meet stuff not to miss? Thanks in advance.

I would not fire Jay for fear of losing Garrett and Courtney. Also for Jay himself. Now as much as I loved bugs the gymnast, I’m not sure I love Ashley the coach.

And construction critics are not always a bad thing. I’m like this in the nba and nfl. Coddling is not realistic with a program with all the talent and resources LSU has. My perspective is a fan of LSU and gymnastics completely . Born and raised in Baton Rouge. It’s just a bummer the program can be so darn good but then have several let downs

I honestly think that the biggest issue we had with beam last night wasn’t necessarily the skills in the routines themselves but the people on the event. Jeff is usually incredibly solid on that event and this is the most I’ve ever seen her falter which ultimately led to Sierra falling (a personnel issue vs a skills issue meaning she was shaky on that event almost everytime she competed it last year so she wasn’t the right person to be in the lineup first meet up this year.) I would’ve put Annie who has always been incredibly solid on beam, though someone mentioned Twitter that the coaching staff may not have wanted 2 newbies back to back on beam for the first meet of the year which is why they went with Si vs Bryce, KJ or anyone else.

Then you have a freshman up after a fall which puts more pressure on her and her routine. In the case of Konnor, if we changed her second leap, I think she would be calmer going into her series and feel more confident about hitting it everytime, especially since she knows she can hit it. Our back 4 are solid and set on that event IMO as are the skills in their routine. We just need to find the right number 2 to follow Jeff who can be solid ala Myia Hambrick regardless of whether Jeff hits a great solid routine or not.

As for Bugs as a coach, I think for me, last season was a turning point for me in terms of how I’ve seen her ability to coach beam and her mindset going into the event which came after watching/rewatching that one episode of The Climb where she addressed the team on their mental approach to that event at meets. Yes beam was rough having to count a fall tomorrow but I say we let the season play out this year and if it costs us the championship again this year, given the talent, depth, work ethic and drive of this team, then we talk about finding someone else to coach beam.

Just getting around to posting since the meet. Couple things...

Lineups were really surprising to me.

Was honestly expecting Konnor to be in the AA from the get go. Not sure if that is in the plans though. That beam routine is just insane.

Definitely was surprised to see Livvy on the floor. That was a solid routine but I'm not sure she stays in the lineup all year, this team is too talented. Happy for her though, she has clearly put in the work. Sierra's floor routine looked a lot better and looks like it could be another year of a nice floor lead off.

Drayton is going to be a stud. Wow.

For the first time in I don't know when, I'm pumped about our bars lineup.

Don't know why they don't just make KJ's vault a 10 start value. 100% she has the ability to do it.

Surprised, but also happy Jay is going with a two pass on the floor. The routines aren't as fun to watch, which is unfortunate, but there's no sense in not playing the game. You're just giving yourself more opportunities for deductions when you do a three pass.

Beam was a disappointment obviously, but overall it was a good start to the season imo. This teams potential is through the roof, especially with Kiya looking like herself.

Konnor is gonna be basically a 2 or 3 event person this year. She is coming off multiple injuries and years of not competing so this year is a transition year getting into NCAA. Her beam is outstanding, they may need to tweak it down the road. We will see how it is in the coming weeks. She won't vault until next year unless she does an exhibition, we are just too deep here this year, it will allow Konnor to focus on those other events more.

Livy has a solid floor routine, obviously that won't be in the post season lineups over people like Amari and Konnor but its nice to have some depth to give kids a rest. Ballard got into better physical shape this offseason, her tumbling has more pop off the floor now.

Lineups were odd but LSU didn't have Brock who IMO is going to be in the vault lineup come post season.

They have to iron out that 2nd spot in the beam lineup. To me out of all the routines, this spot is the most up in the air but there isn't an excuse not to develop a solid routine here with the talent and depth LSU has.

Got ya. Didn't know that was what the expectation was coming in. I'm good with that. That's a good problem to have.

She definitely did. She's still one of the bigger girls on the team (not knocking her for this or saying it's a bad thing, just a fact), but you can tell she has lost weight and clearly looks in better shape.

I personally don't see Sierra in the beam lineup by the end of the year. Jay seems to have thankfully gotten off the "play your more experienced gymnast" strategy he was so stuck on with the super seniors so hopefully he can make an adjustment if he needs too. I think he will. I'd honestly like to see KJ get another shot at it. And after one meet I'm already like dang let me see what Drayton can do with everything.

My memory is foggy. Was Aleah not that great on vault last year? Curious if Jay was holding her off the AA because of load management or if it was performance based. Honestly can't remember how well she did on the vault last year.

I like Elena and I thought she was always underscored on the vault, but I don't think she is going to get much action this year. Hate it for her, but just being honest, if you're wanting to compete for a championship, you can't have a gymnast that's consistently turning in 9.75's on numerous events.
