I think Baker has done a good job in his tenure considering where the defense was when he got here and how it is now, but it’s clear he simply isn’t in the elite tier of coordinators despite us paying him like he is.

That’s probably a fair assessment.

Part of the issue is that there are maybe 4 total elite DCs in the game right now. A few like Elko, Venables and Lea are head coaches and won’t be available unless they bottom out.

He was bad, and the QB draw that every blind man could see coming being that easy to score was the icing on the cake.

Agree.

IMO, it wasn't all bad with Lane retaining him. He's not a terrible DC and retaining probably eased the transition in some respects. Similar to when Les kept Jimbo.

Lane goes for it on 4th and a half yard, gets it and we’re praising Blake Baker

This is lame. Even Saban and Kirby have had bad games. Baker is still a young coordinator and he’s far better than what we had before him.

True, what I really meant to say was we retained him with the expectation to enter that tier but he simply folds way too much in big games. It makes sense why lane would keep him because there weren’t really any better options, but you’d think in year 3 he’d be able to get over the hump

The last drive and OT were horrible but Baker adjusted in the second half and did a good job even with getting put in bad situations by the turnovers. They were very good until we punted on 4th and 1. So if Lane goes and gets the yard everybody is praising Baker for his halftime adjustments.
