The question in recruiting now with the portal is the "current ability"
I'm sure that a player like Desmond Ricks has a higher upside than Zy Alexander (and this discussion could be about anyone, just using them as an example)
But who do we think will be better in 2023? If you need a plug-and-play player, are you looking for a freshman or a veteran with 3-years of college experience, maturity, weight training, etc.
2-3 years from now, Ricks is probably the better player. I bet Alexander will be better next year, and possibly in 2024.
It's hard to answer, because all players are different, but it's a debate these coaches are having daily about recruits.

Richardson & Darron Evans didn't do a thing here.
And neither one of them had offers to Miami, USC, and Oklahoma.

How much eligibility does he have left?

This guy is much better than the dude we got from Nicholls, right?

Definitely debatable
Lots of 5 stars never pan out. Lots or FCS kids end up being pros
I think if you need immediate help you go portal. Ideally you keep building your depth with high school kids and eventually get go a point where you develop your own guys. We just have been in such a crisis with numbers we need plug and play guys or else we will be throwing true freshmen out there
Quite the mess left behind by Orgeron.
Kelly is absolutely doing this the right way imo. Not that he has asked for my opinion.

I'll believe it when I see it... we're 0 for 2 on recent FCS CBs. Richardson & Darron Evans didn't do a thing here.
Trust me. This guy’s different. Check the highlight reel. Evans and Richardson weren’t 2x FCS All-Americans

Wonder how many scholarships we have left for the February signing period.
Kelly said he expected to add mid to high 30s between high schoolers and portal guys, so I would think this means we potentially have up to 6-7 more spots for the right players.

Hopefully he'll come in and turn out to be a great addition like Garner. Im not shitting on him but calling it "Massive" is kinda wild lol.
All fall camp we heard about how Richardson was looking like CB1 and we found out real quick once the season started that he was in over his head at this level of CFB.

This guy will win the Thorpe Award if OKtiger says this.

Agree. He’s a kid that ordinarily LSU fans would never have heard of until draft day and then seeing him lined up for the Ravens one day. The NFL has a number lot of talented FCS kids, and he’s one of them.

The jury is out on every signee at every school. There are massive failures and successes.
Alexander has nothing in common with the other FCS players we have signed, except the level of play.
Every player is his own person, with his own motivations, skill levels, etc.
Boxing players together because of an NCAA classification is lazy and pretty stupid.

You're all vested now, kid. Don't back off the negativity!

Richardson was not a star, but he was a good get and we definitely needed him. The staff would take him again if given the opportunity.
He was not a waste by any means.

Neither was all Americans!! Nor did they have mid round draft grades But I get what you are saying

Zy Alexander had a lot of offers from other schools including USC, Miami, etc.

Already has offers from Southern Cal, WVU, Michigan State, Miami, Baylor and others. I'm told Oklahoma has shown interest also.
So you may be right that he won't have much of an impact or all of these schools are seeing the same thing and know he's a player worth having.
