Ju'Juan Johnson: 4-Star Cornerback
The most productive high school quarterback in Louisiana prep history with a record 14,451 total yards and 171 total touchdowns, also a state record … Will play cornerback for the Tigers … Rated as a 4-star prospect and the nation’s No. 9 cornerback prospect in the On3 composite … Listed as the No. 9 overall prospect in Louisiana … Ranked as high as No. 6 overall in Louisiana by 247sports and No. 7 by Rivals … Led Lafayette Christian Academy to four straight appearances in the state championship game … Tallied 457 total yards (270 passing, 187 rushing) and 3 rushing TDs in 2023 state title game against St. Thomas More … As a junior in 2022, set state championship game record with 595 yards and 5 TDs in 52-48 defeat to St. Thomas More … Broke Brock Berlin’s Louisiana record for total offense in state quarterfinal win … Broke Nick Brossette’s Louisiana record for total touchdowns … Brossette, who played at LSU, currently serves as LSU’s director of high school and alumni relations … Finished prep career with over 10,500 passing yards and 117 touchdowns and nearly 4,000 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns … Tallied 8 TDs in a win over Acadiana in the 2023 season-opener … Rushed for 270 yards in a win over 5A Jesuit … In final game of high school career, accounted for 457 yards of total offense, including 192 rushing yards, and 3 TDs in Division II State Championship Game vs. St. Thomas More … As a junior, produced 5,487 yards of total offense and 60 touchdowns … Passed for 4,140 yards and 43 TDs and rushed for 1,347 yards and 17 scores in 2022 … As a senior, passed for 3,597 yards and 43 TDs and rushed for 1,484 yards and 25 touchdowns … Lafayette Christian Academy retired his No. 7 jersey following a quarterfinal playoff game in 2023 … One of 5 players nationally named as a finalist for the MaxPreps National Player of the Year … Coached by Hunter Landry.
This kid was an amazing HS QB, why is he coming in as a CB?

This kid was an amazing HS QB, why is he coming in as a CB?

Because of his size and the fact that he’s an athlete playing the QB position. His future projects better as a CB.

Most likely because of his height and possibly arm strength….

Ot would waste his opportunity much like Russell Sheppards early years. He's not going to beat out legit qbs so may as well begin the adjustment from jump. He accepted it long ago

But he accounted for over 14,000 yards and 171 TD’s.

In high school. Most people, including himself, seem to think it won't translate to the college game.

I said months ago that LSU signed 2 defensive projected players who could definitely serve as a wildcat QB. Those are Johnson and Rogers. Usually everyone knows the wildcat QB is just going to run but with either of these two, you would have to respect the potential to pass.
You get an upvote from me not as a full time QB but a wildcat/few plays a game one. He has even said that he discussed with Kelly the occasional opportunity at QB. I agree with Johnson on that.

His issue is not arm strength or size as some may think, though his size is not ideal. The issue is a combination of decision-making, accuracy, and ball security. He also had a habit of pressing too much when he made mistakes and compounding the mistakes.
The things he could do in high school that turned into long gains and touchdowns would be short gains, losses, and turnovers.
The other thing is his fluidity when running and changing direction, his ability to rapidly and almost effortlessly swivel his hips made him very slippery in traffic but also makes him ideally suited to play corner at some point.

Hope he gets the ball in his hands. Have not watched the tape but will. Having a nose for the end zone and that vision needed with the ball in your hands is elite.

It’s possible that his skill set and other attributes may not translate into a top flight college QB.

For the same reason Bussey isnt. They project at the next level at a different position.
Bussey single-handedly willed his team to the State Championship but nobody is recruiting him as a QB.

Former gator Danny wurfel could tell you why.

Louisiana High schools are known for putting their best athlete at QB's while they're recruited to play a different position. Reuben Randle, Randall Mackey, John Diarse, Paul Turner, Speedy Noil, Jacoby Matthews etc. Are some examples to name a few.

Early Doucet played QB in HS. Unless you have a lot of talent on the HS team, there's a big advantage to putting your best athlete at QB in HS. Joel Rogers played some QB at West Feliciana, but also a lot of WR because they had a QB who could get him the ball.

Louisiana is known for putting the best athlete at QB. That’s why we usually have to go out of state for a true QB

The answer is very simple. He has NFL talent at CB. He does not have NFL talent at QB.
