or why East Africans dominate distance races but don't do well in sprints or that neither are good at swimming. Or why many star athletes have parents that are not athletic. Its probably not selective breeding but overall genetics in the races that took place over thousands of years, not a couple of hundred.

west africans had to elude animals not found in other parts of the world... they also didn't deal with cold weather that helped select traits found in other countries

New York state has more African Americans than any other state, at just over 3 million. Yet NY is only 7th in terms of NFL players, with less than half of the players put out by CA and TX. Culture plays a big role.

Black Speed Hypothesis
Some of the questions made me think of this article I read a while back. Not trying to purport it as fact, but just thought I'd throw it in the mix.
Also, out of curiosity, I tried to find a study on selective breeding during slavery and upon googling it, all of the links were to different message boards all asking the same question. I guess whoever said it was right, if there was ever a study, maybe they just never let it get out.

I was just waiting for a Michigan or tOSU fan to chime in.
I knew they wouldn't disappoint.

last time I saw a break down, NY wasn't in the top 15. The outliers in terms of population were La (in top 15 for # of NFL players, not top 15 population) and NY (top 15 pop, not top 15 for # of players.

Year round football, more camps, more popular sport in the south all play a role.

Interestingly, I used to see Coach Eddie Robinson from time to time, a prince of a man I might add. For years he did not have anyone who could kick an extra point or field goal very well. I asked him about this once and he told me that the majority of the kids he could recruit, and he said "black" kids, lived in inner cities and did not have anywhere to kick or practice kicking. He said a lot of other things that some might attack me as racist if I repeated them but they were along the lines of genetics, etc.

I think you might be ok. This has turned into a pretty interesting thread, free of the usual racist accusations that these topics generate.

Damn, I'd love to hear that stuff
Political correctness and the progressive obsession with equality of outcome has blinded them to reality. There was a stretch, I think thru 2000 or 2004, not sure, but 4 or straight men's 100M finals, all 8 finalists were of West African decent. That's statistically almost impossible by random chance.

Fast twitch muscle fiber. Runner's World had the guts to do a story on it a couple of decades ago (and got vilified). But their article predicted that the west african dominance in running would continue because it is genetic based, and they have been right so far.

A far more plausible explanation IMO.

That's a good point. There are a few issues that come to mind about NY (and surely some that I'm overlooking as well).
1. A more diverse culture in NY, as opposed to southern states where a lot of these kids are hyper-focused on football.
2. Weather, which leads to no. 3.
3. Basketball being the favored sport for a lot of kids, or at least the sport they play the most.
I reviewed Rivals rankings for top (4 & 5 star) football & basketball prospects from New York from 2003-2012. Then Louisiana for comparison.
New York (2003-12) Top Football Prospects
5 stars - 3
4 stars - 21
New York (2003-12) Top Basketball Prospects
5 stars - 12
4 stars - 33
Louisiana (2003-12) Top Football Prospects
5 stars - 12
4 stars - 106
Louisiana (2003-12) Top Basketball Prospects
5 stars - 5
4 stars - 9

I was recently watching an old episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, and was reminded of this thread.
33:26 - about 36:00 - Joe talks about some of the topics in this thread with developmental biologist Bruce Lipton.

Selective breeding
Fist of all, slaves typically married -- they weren't "bred" the way dogs or horses are bred. Secondly, southern slave owners wanted slaves to work long hours doing drudgery. If slaves had been "bred" for something, it would be endurance, not athleticism. The very last thing that a slaveowner would have wanted was someone who could run faster than anyone else.

This is something that I am very curious about, and am keeping an open mind about.
I haven't really ever read anything substantial on the issue either way. But I don't think your point about endurance holds up. If you're working from the premise that breeding did occur, I would think that a healthy body would be what a slave owner would have looked for. I don't see how work capacity, strength, virility, and other such traits would not be part of the selective criteria.
Lipton totally discounted selective breeding, but didn't give any reasons why, and I can't completely agree with his answer of stress & environment. It's an interesting factor, but his worldview is one that downplays the significance of genetics, but almost all of the top sprint times recorded in human history were run by people with West African ancestry.
