Looking back to the 2023 class and I can’t help but see not signing Matthews as a big hit

Listed at 6’2, 185 with 10.66 100M track times — that would be nice to have at corner right now.

Dad played at LSU. From BR. Coached by Marcus Randall. Teammate signed with LSU.

What happened here?

Was a top 125 player overall by On3.

A&M came in with lots of NIL money to seal the deal

We picked up a much higher-rated player at that position in Toviano and a couple of portal CBs though maybe those did not pan out so well. But at the time that was probably a contributor to him going elsewhere. It would have been nice to have him too.

Toviano is a nickel/safety forced to play corner because of limited options. And he was recruited to play those spots.

Nah. Toviano committed late. Portal DBs wouldn’t have committed until December/January. Jordan Matthews announced his intentions in august.

Yes, my mistake, I was looking at his current listed position rather than his HS recruitment position.

I was actually thinking the portal pickups as much as Toviano.

I remember hearing his camp felt spurned by lsu for not offering soon enough or giving him enough love. (Even though lsu was one of his first major offers). It seemed to me as an outsider there was no pleasing those folks and he was going to go somewhere else.

LSU slowplayed him because he was in their backyard.

LSU coaches hardly stepped foot on the Woodlawn campus.

The previous staff offered him. Kelly and Co. barely showed interest until he was already a Tennessee commit.

Yeah and do you remember how big of a Twitter hashtag campaign it took to get Rick to “reconsider”?

Wanted him bad. Think they slow played him tho he had traits that should have garnered an early offer

6’2, 185 10.66 100M with physicality don’t grow on trees, LE

Also young for his recruiting class.

How the frick does this happen considering his ties to LSU
