What does Men’s Basketball recruiting look like?

Are we in on any top recruits?
Will we get back to pulling 5 star players?
Transfer portal for another year? Or is that going to be our main tool?
Not complaining if it is. I think that’s just how basketball works.

I’d imagine they’ll have to hit the portal for a bunch of guys next year. The program McMahon inherited had as many flaws as any in the country from a roster stand point. Good news is, we’ve seen other schools make big improvements in short order and LSU can do the same, or at least become much more viable in the sec.

Currently 49th on On3 with two commits. Also an average NIL of $10K. It’s not looking good for basketball

MM pulled a rabbit out with that last class with just a few days and a depleted roster to field a competitive team. I wouldn't give up on the class just yet.

Just a reminder there was literally no one on LSU’s roster when CMM was hired and he ending up putting together a top-20 class. Give this shite some time for fricks sake

I agree he should have time like any new coach. Just curious what that looks like. 3-4 recruiting cycles?
Honestly most people didn’t even care about basketball until Will Wade was here and made it relevant. He did it in short order. Hopefully MM can do the same. He will need some time. There was a lot of changes and issues when he took over.

I would point out that the Top 20 class you speak of was on display last night. The proof is in the playing.
We took a pair of middling recruits in November and McMahon will have to purge basically half his roster at the end of the season because they can't play.
I'm not criticizing. I'm saying we're going to be living in the portal for at least another year, and the results are going to have to be a lot better or else the stink will settle on the program and we won't be attractive to the high-value recruits we need to hang with the league.
It's a little scary right now. Not time to panic, but it isn't going very well.

Asked question on 247 and sonny ship said this year will be heavy portal from what he has been told. Sucks
What I want to see is the recruits from last season get developed before they transfer. 4* ward, 4* Jalen reed, 4* Shawn Phillips
Edit. Also have a 4* committed in Corey chest PF but very skinny.
Imo MM lands a bunch of 4* s he can coach that team.
First year in sec maybe he will see with a better eye the transfers to target.

The issue right now is that its fairly late in the 2023 recruiting cycle so he is having to play catch up with a lot of the relationships with those recruits. We were in the mix for a few players earlier in the cycle and made their top 3, but imo the possibility of sanctions put us at a severe disadvantage to other teams. 2024 is looking like a lot better of a HS recruiting class just based on offers and players we are in the mix for, but next year will have to be another transfer portal heavy class. A lot of people are complaining about some of the players he brought in through the portal this year, but I think a lot of people overlook how difficult it is to recruit for a team when the possibility of not being able to play in the tourney bc of sanctions is hanging over your head. That's why McMahon had to take a lot of players who either he had a previous relationship with so they cared more about sticking with him or players who weren't getting looked at by a ton of other high tier programs. That's how we got where we are but I trust Mcmahon that as he is able to build those relationships and get out from under this NCAA bullshite, the HS recruiting with quickly pick up

We desperately need guards. Both creators and shooters

They've missed on a lot of guys. They do seem to be getting interest, just not able to get them across the finish line.
I guess the fact that guys are interested at all is a good sign this early.

Maybe if you’re 80 year old white dude or under 12. Many LSU fans enjoyed successful LSU teams.
I think the way Wade cheated and the dark cloud that was constantly overhead of a very underachieving roster soured a lot of people’s true appreciation of the sport. Fun teams to watch but always that thought in your head that this will all be undone by NCAA.

We have some of the worst fans who fall prisoner of the moment too quickly. Imagine this team with E. Gaines and Brandon Murray. We did not a have team for this new coach to take over. Let's judge hear deeper into year 2-3.
CMM is probably unfairly being judged based on CBK's quick success. I believe he is the guy. Just a week ago everyone was praising him
.
Remember the time some these same people hated CWW because he played street ball and didn't design great plays or coach good defense? Well CMM is that type of coach. We just need more talent.

This program is sort of competing under the "death penalty". Don't have very many players for this level and no top notch recruits want to come here without receiving $$$$$$$$. Really going to take some time to be competitive in the SEC. I admire McMahon for taking this on. Seems to be a good basketball man. Don't know if he will be able to recruit his way out of this mess

Literally all this means is that these guys don't have lots of social media followers or get lots of people googling their names. It has nothing to do with actual NIL offers.

For 2023 it sounds like we're done outside getting guys in the portal, which, meh performance there but McMahon was barely here for this class. There's another singinig period for 2023 in April but looking at 247 rankings there's only 5 guys left unsigned/uncommitted as a 4/5 star recruit and 1 of those guys is LeBron's son
2024 we'll get to see what McMahon is made of since he's actually going to have over a year to recruit those guys. the first signing period for those 2024 kids will be November later this year. Who knows how that will turn out, recruiting will heat up for that after this season.
