For a month now, 5 to 6 top flight recruits have been strongly connected to LSU. Everyone here cheered. Rightfully so. However, we had 23 commitments. How did you think this was going to work?

It’s recruiting, we always are connected to top recruits but never land all of the “silent commits.”

Remember the supposed 5/5. We went 2/5. My guess was we would land one or two of these top recruits and not have to “process” anyone.

It pains me because it CAN hurt credibility in later years. Not always but it can damage the school’s message to recruits...especially in state kids.
Cutting free Jalen Lee was the one that stung. Risky move.

It astounds me.

Players will commit to a school, reinforce said commitment, then decommit without any notice given every cycle and that's a "business decision."

But when schools make a similar business decision, people get angry?

It is unfortunately the nature of recruiting now.

The 5/5 thing was created by fans. You don't know everything that goes on behind the scenes. Maybe the coaches knew that 1,2, or 3 of those guys weren't coming here. You also don't know that if we process a recruit it doesn't mean they aren't welcome here. Maybe the coaches tell them what happened and are giving the big fish the early signing period to sign. If they don't then the scholarship will go to the processed player. If one of the best defensive ends in the country says that they want to come to LSU then you make room. It really is as simple as that.

Recruiting is extremely fluid. That top out of state DE may say he wants in today but pressures from people at home may change that when it’s time to sign on the line.

The coaches have to make the call on the likelihood that he actually signs before letting an in state 4 star go to another school. We don’t have the info to make that call.

BTW, our coaches thought 5/5 was going to happen. The Bama insiders were the ones giving us the heads up that it wasn’t happening. Jimmy then gave everyone a heads up the day before signing day.

Hurts a lot less when you’re more straightforward with recruits early in the process so that they have time to land elsewhere, than waiting until the last minute and everyone’s class is already full

That will really burn bridges

It’s an Amazon.com mindset. ‘They’ want instant gratification, and they want it NOW (if not sooner). So they expected to see the ‘new’ commits instantly.

That’s all I got.

Or NOT. Bama had the one guy in tears recently when told he couldn’t sign on NSD. Then the REC made backdoor deals and he still made the team by ‘paying his own way’ for a year.

We really don't need this many threads on this topic, it's really not that big of a deal and makes us look like we're in the minor leagues, it's embarrassing tbh

If we don't have the info to make the call then don't worry about making the call. The coaches know more than we do. Everyone is so worried about processing recruits now. Would you rather finish 5 in recruiting and then 5th in the polls or do you want to win championships.

I agree. It sucks but it's obviously a part of the business, especially when you want to land elite players. Raising the costs to attend games also sucks, but sometimes it has to be done. College football is a HUGE business.

Is it really that horrible for a teenager to be forced to go to Colorado, Ole Miss, or Arkansas etc instead of LSU? Think it might be more beneficial to go where they will play more and possibly be the star recruit? The sting of not going to LSU will only last until they sign somewhere else for most of them. Besides, maybe the "processed" players did not mind looking elsewhere.

Yep, and nowadays kids sign and next thing you know they want to transfer or get in the portal...where is their alligence? All this talk about commitments- there is no contract, no guarantee of any kind on the kid or University until signing date.

I agree with you.... and as it turned out.... of the 5, which ones actually produced in college?

Maybe 3 of them, total?
