Undersigning might be the way to go

With the lack of camps and visits we are going to have a ton of underrated players sign with mid-majors, div II, and jucos. It stands to reason that those who turn out to be great are going to want to transfer to contenders, just as Jabril Cox did.

If a school like LSU has some scholarships in hand it could pay off in a big way. It’s not a long term plan, but it might prove to be wise the next two years.

That’s always the goal. But if you’re signing studs then you’re likely losing studs early and will need fillers at some point in some capacity. I think we can do better but it’s not over just yet.

I think they should sign 22 and leave 3 open each year for the portal.

It's a new world.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we hold one past signing day this year for a LB or OL from the portal, depending on who signs. And they don’t have to rush that, as there may be some guys who hit the portal after Spring practice looking for a change of scenery.

As long as the ncaa allows these kids to come and go as they please, then it will never end, they need to go back to old rules when u had to sit out a season, make a kid think twice before he bolts for greener pastures!!

NCAA definitely needs to adapt more quickly to this paradigm shift wether it’s temporary or permanent. They can’t allow outflow freely while capping your ability to replace them. There needs to be a maximum of scholarship players allowed per year on set day. If you lose a lot then you can refill. Maybe exception is early NFL departures to keep upper echelon teams from restocking with high level transfers each year.

If you can get 25 guys you like, that’s what you should do. Using the portal can be a good way to fill holes but it’s not a sustainable way to actually build a team

Considering we aren't allowed to get to 85 this year, it's definitely the smart play unless they think/know that a handful or more of kids are going to bail after spring

You are getting downvotes but it isn’t a bad strategy. You can pick from kids that have actually played college ball and you have film on them vs a high school kid who is much more of a crapshoot.

Bama signs 25+ and will likely take who they want from the portal too. We need in on that plan.

I've been saying this for the last 2 years.

Definitely leave a spot and this year I'd probably leave 2.

I feel like they’re gonna have to adjust some rules with transfers becoming more
Common.

BTJ and a transfer OL or LB should be the only two that sign in addition to Kimo and Savion. Leave the other spot for another transfer or for next class.

Yes, LSU sign 22 meanwhile Bama finds a way to sign 30 and get everybody they want every year.

With the way the 22 Louisiana class is shaping up I agree for this year. We have a chance at a huge class next year.

I want 15-17 local kids in this next class. Sick of the flight risks give me local kids who got some dog in them.

How many offers do we put out every year? 120? Minimum 80 or somewhere near there. Versus over 400 in the portal, probably over 700 now actually (haven't looked in a while). With player like the TN LB and a guy named Arik Gilbert, both really good talents, floating around. So just by "supply" in the supply vs. demand equation the portal is the better market on a quantity side only.

The biggest resource drain in recruiting is identifying and then evaluating everyone that isn't an absolute stud no-brainer. So is it resource-cheaper to evaluate a portal player or HS recruit.... portal. You have more film and have more eyes, that you didn't pay for, on them a longer.

From a risk perspective... who has more restrictions/rules creating liability in violating the rules and receiving punishments. HS recruits by a very very long shot.

Quality... the quality, especially over a period of 2 years, lies in the HS recruits on the average. Your chances of getting an attitude problem or lazy from the portal is higher (again, applied over the average). But because of the portal we're seeing it increase in the HS recruits because it is easy to pick up their ball and go home and become the portal at the drop of the hat. And apparently the best way to prepare for the NFL now is to hire trainers, not play an SEC schedule. This quality differential between portal for 2 yrs. vs. HS recruit for 2 years is getting narrower.

So yeah, the portal is the better value right now. 3 spots is too low if you look at it objectively & logically, IF and only if, the 1-time transfer rule passes later this year (it is highly likely it is tabled until March-April 2022). So without the 1-time transfer waiver (permanent) in place, 2 or 3 spots is about right.
