Without portal players where is the defense going to be better?

Experience and coaching for one.

This is certainly true in the DB room. We have several young players that got some playing time that should be much better with just the experience.

There is a deficit on the DLine in terms of numbers, to be sure, but if Wingo and Smith return, with the Juco kid coming in, we'll at least be competent.

With either new coaches or better coaching, the defense should be top 50 next year (LB and edge are strong)...this year, it would been good enough to be in consideration for the playoffs.

Lsu doesn’t have great organization on the NIL side of things that’s the difference!

The way to build is through HS recruiting. You take 1/2 difference makers portal. Ed left a dumpster fire. Kelly had to use portal last year. Taking Walter Nolan would have been nice but he is from Olive Branch, 1 hour from Oxford. Coming home. Ettienne wasn’t at a position of need.

None of this is true. Kelly has been saying the the past 2 seasons that his intent is to get to a point where we are focused on building through recruiting room HIGH SCHOOL and devoting them into great players.

In a perfect world, I would agree with Kelly, but in this day and age, you have to use the portal to win games immediately. The days of a kid coming in, slowly developing and eventually becoming a starter are over.

Also, our defense is so bad that we don't have the luxury of taking our time. We're horrible at too many positions and CBK won't be around long enough to develop players, if he doesn't improve that defense ASAP. Winning 9 regular season games is great in the beginning, but CBK was brought in to win SEC and NCs, period!

IMO, the transfer portal is CBK's lifeline at LSU and he needs to use it to get the program back on track!

You can definitely win with them. It’s just hard to be consistent depending on the portal as your primary source for talent. This year’s class at LSU is a perfect example of how it can go wrong. Then you are left with guys who don’t have a real connection with your program who may check out on you or just quit.

We're not past full if we have people leaving in the Portal.

Exactly. I'm not even exxagerrating when I say this is the worst I've seen this board in a super long time.

If we actually sucked at recruiting, I would understand, but no, this is some sort of amalgamation of always shitty and negative recruiting board posters, mixed with casuals that have no idea what they are talking about, and alters who may or may not be from other schools. Some of these guys hate LSU because they are alters. Some hate Kelly, (Notre Dame fans, Orgeron fans, Napier fans, Kiffin fans), and some hate LSU for letting go of Orgeron's destructive arse.

We are taking close to 30 from highschool this year. Going heavy on developing HS players is clearly the strategy. Find a handful of impact portal players every year or fill needs if the depth chart has holes. For example, next year we will have to take about 2 DTs from the portal due to need.

Why do so many still wonder whether grabbing players from the portal works? You can look over the landscape of CFB and oftentimes some of the best players on a team came from the portal. Hell, JD5 came from the portal. FSU grabbed a lot of portal players and it worked for them. 3 of the 4 Heisman candidates this year were portal players.

At this point, choosing to utilize the portal a lot or a little is just personal preference. Everybody thought the portal would fill up with guys not receiving a lot of playing time. The portal has quickly moved beyond that and is full of guys that started and still want to be in a better situation.

LSU tried their hand at the portal last year and it didn't work out. The portal game is still too new to effectively determine is it better to build through high school recruits OR portal guys. However, due to the portal, waiting for freshmen to develop and become impact players by the Junior season is growing less appealing than just grabbing what you need to win right now. Again, it's all preference and CBK wants to build through high school recruiting and puts an emphasis on LA kids. Either it'll work out or it won't.

The admins need to wack some of these alter accounts and put some restrictions on this board before it comes just another sub-forum of the fricking Rant.

BK has repeatedly said that he’ll build the roster through high school recruiting and only supplement with the portal.

It’s all about money. LSU collective is a mess and seems like there is no structure.

Or they are saving to pay for the 25-26 classes that will be epic and keep those guys for three years.
