Transfer portal and high school recruits

Why do people say that transfers will take spots that a HS recruit usually would?
To me ,
The transfers just cancel each other out. And if they are transferring from lower levels(d2, naia , etc) wouldn’t that just open those spots up?

It depends on the sport.
For football, why would you take a project at a position like offensive line when you can instead go and get a 23 year old 5th year senior to come in and play right away?
Coaches will leave spots open at the bottom of the class to try and find a plug and play guy instead of developing a high schooler than can bounce after one year.

Why spend $750,000+ on a high school kid that may or may not be good vs using that same money on a player that has college tape proving he is worth that money. When you have limited resources then every dollar you spend better be spent wisely. How many 4 and 5 stars have you not seen pan out?
I’m not saying not to recruit these guys because you absolutely need them. However, if they demand more than you can pay or what could wisely be spent on 2 guys with high potential, you have to cut the recruitment off and use that money in the portal or the 2 high potential guys.
If you have unlimited money then you can do what Texas, Oregon and Ohio St are doing. We didn’t lose Blaine because of money. We lost him because we haven’t developed a safety since 2019. Start developing safeties and rebuild our DBU reputation and we will get guys like Blaine again. This may involve Kelly hiring someone known for developing safeties if his current guy can’t get it together this year.

Players just have to start out at a lower level, if they aren’t elite…or their body isn’t to SEC standards. Those S&C coaches in the SEC are serious business.
I’m pretty nervous about that side of it for my son.

It mattered more when there were class limits of 25, someone who transfers would count against two class limits. Someone who transfers twice would count against three. Now that it's only roster limits, someone transferring opens up one spot to fill another.

wryder1 agreed 100%
The opportunity cost of missing on a freshman is higher than that of a transfer. Freshmen are largely immature, with skillsets that are not defined. And they will jump into the portal when they don't get their way. Recruit the ones that will make an instant impact and develop them to the moon.

I agree with all of that, except this
These two statements contradict each other. I would bet he's committed to OSU more because of the deal he is being offered, than how they develop the position. Caleb Downs wasn't developed by OSU... I do agree we need to develop the safety position, but we also haven't had the talent at safety since 2019.

Can't make a ribeye out of ground meat. None of the past safeties that were playing at LSU since 2019 have done much.

It trickles down. If every player goes down a notch in competition level, eventually someone is at the bottom with no seat.

These high school recruits want to play high level D1, not D2 or NAIA.

Who gives a shite what they want? Not all will make it and it’s always been and always will be like that. For the money spent on SEC athletics they have a duty to the fans to roster the best players they can find, and they probably aren’t freshmen who were just in high school a few months ago

You seem to think I’m upset about this. I never implied they were owed a spot. I was simply stating a fact.

I’m not talking about NIL atheltes.
I’m talking more lower tier… think Nicholls, Southeasten, etc. D2/NAIA kids…
I’m thinking no req-“‘impact, correct?
. You’ll have good players transferring to bigger schools and players from “bigger” schools that are transferring down. So that would even out.
Not even sure if I am making sense…
